Using a VPN (Virtual Private Network) while flying on an airplane is indeed possible, but there are some important considerations and limitations to keep in mind. Airlines are increasingly offering in-flight Wi-Fi on many domestic and international routes, and this connectivity allows passengers to access the internet mid-flight. However, the quality, speed, and stability of in-flight internet can vary significantly depending on the airline, the aircraft, and even your location in the sky.

When you connect to an airplane Wi-Fi network, your device typically gets a public IP address provided by the airline’s internet service. This connection is often shared among many passengers, which can make it slower than your home or mobile internet. VPNs work by encrypting your internet traffic and routing it through a secure server before it reaches the wider internet. This means that theoretically, you can activate a VPN on your laptop, tablet, or smartphone while connected to in-flight Wi-Fi to secure your data and access content as if you were on the ground.

Practical Considerations:

Speed Limitations: Since airplane Wi-Fi is often slower and has higher latency than regular connections, using a VPN may further reduce speed. Streaming videos or large downloads could become difficult.

Security Benefits: A VPN encrypts your data, which is particularly useful on shared networks like airplane Wi-Fi. This adds a layer of security against potential eavesdropping.

Service Restrictions: Some airlines restrict certain types of traffic or block access to certain ports. While most standard VPN protocols like OpenVPN or IKEv2 work, some advanced features or less common protocols might not.

Legal and Airline Policies: While using a VPN is generally legal, it’s important to follow the airline’s terms of service. Some airlines may block or throttle VPN connections, although outright bans are rare.

Practical Setup: To use a VPN on a flight, simply connect to the in-flight Wi-Fi, launch your VPN app, and connect to your preferred server. It’s often recommended to use servers that are geographically closer to your final destination for better speed and latency.

In summary, yes, it is possible to use a VPN while flying, and it can improve security and privacy during your journey. However, you should temper expectations regarding speed and streaming capabilities due to the limitations of in-flight internet. Always check your airline’s Wi-Fi policy before relying heavily on a VPN during a flight.

I see you recc to connect first then VPN - I'll try that; I find that if I have my Nord VPN on, then I cannot connect to the aircraft wifi - Virgin, Qantas and SQ most recently.

But most aircraft wifi is so slow that I think a VPN would render it useless - Qatar with Starlink at 150mbps an exception.
