With Qatar Airways now only giving Qantas frequent flyers access to Business & First Class reward seats around 4 months out from departure, it’s become a lot harder to redeem Qantas points for Qatar Airways Qsuites.
You can still redeem Velocity points for Qatar Airways flights up to 330 days ahead. But Qatar Airways Privilege Club, Iberia Plus and British Airways Executive Club members have access to all available reward seats up to 355 days out. (These programs all use Avios as their points currencies.)
With Qatar Airways generally releasing two Business Class award seats per flight exactly 355 days before departure, this means people with Avios now get “first dibs”. Plus, with Qatar Airways Business Class redemptions from Australia to Europe costing just 90,000 Avios (plus several hundred dollars in taxes), it’s a great deal for British Airways Executive Club members!
It’s generally not that easy to earn Avios in Australia. But British Airways Executive Club recently began selling subscriptions to purchase Avios at monthly intervals at a significant discount.
With an Adventurer subscription, for example, you could receive 200,000 Avios per year for around AUD3,100. That’s enough Avios for a round-trip Qatar Airways Business ticket from Sydney to London, 16 one-way Qantas Business flights from Sydney to Melbourne, or 33 one-way Qantas Economy flights from Sydney to Brisbane!
In Episode 95 of the AFF on Air podcast, Matt explains how the new Avios subscriptions work and why they could be good value for Australians.
Speaking of Qatar Airways, in this episode Matt also chats to Australian Frequent Flyer forum moderator JessicaTam, who recently returned from Doha flying in Qsuites. This interview includes a discussion about Qsuites, their favourite airline lounges and tips on travelling without checked baggage. Plus, find out why JessicaTam got into the habit of gifting chocolates to the cabin crew on her flights.
