Virgin Removes Bag-Free Fares. Enhancement or not?

On 17 March 2015 Virgin will remove the Saver-Lite fares from all domestic routes except Trans-Tasman routes. Virgin have announced that all fares will now include complimentary check-in luggage. Our members are sceptical about this so called enhancement.

Firstly many members are disappointed that they will no longer have the bag-free option which allowed them to not only travel light but also saves a few dollars in the process. Secondly, many members speculate that this alleged “complimentary” check-in luggage will soon result in a fare-increase for all. Thirdly, they assert that this change is not in line with Virgins status as a low cost carrier.

Some members are a little more optimistic about the change and have managed to see the glass half- full. Firstly, they acknowledge that on many Virgin flights the overhead lockers have been overcrowded and this change may rectify this situation. Second, on one member’s recent booking they saw no change to the fare price and so they welcome the change provided it remains truly “complimentary”
