American Express Explorer and Qantas Amex Premium cardholders can now earn an easy 5,000 bonus points by adding an additional cardholder to their account.

This offer, which expires on 26 February 2021 (extended from 1 February), is available to anyone with either of these American Express credit cards. There is no minimum spend required to earn the 5,000 points – you would just need to apply online for an additional card by 26 February and get approved.

According to the offer terms & conditions, the primary cardholder will receive the bonus points within 8-10 weeks of the additional card being approved. But an AFF member says they received their points the following day.

If you have a Qantas Amex Premium card, you’ll receive 5,000 bonus Qantas points with this offer. For Amex Explorer cardholders, it’s 5,000 Amex Membership Rewards points (which are generally worth 2,500 airline miles when transferred to a frequent flyer program).

Other Amex cards are not part of this offer. But American Express runs similar promotions every now and again. Previous offers of bonus points for adding additional Amex cardholders took place in 2019 and 2017.

How much does it cost to add an additional American Express card member?

If you have an American Express Explorer credit card, you can add up to 4 additional cardholders for no cost.

With the Qantas American Express Premium card, there may be a $30 supplementary cardholder fee for some Amex members while it’s free for others. You can log in to your Amex account to check if there is an additional card fee that applies to your account.

According to the offer terms & conditions, you’ll only receive 5,000 bonus points for the first additional card you add during this promotion. However, another AFF member says they were offered a second bonus when adding a second supplementary cardholder over the phone.

Additional Amex cardholders can be anyone over the age of 16, including family members. Any points earned from spend on the additional card/s will go to the primary cardholder (who is also responsible for paying the balance), while additional cardholders can also receive access to rewards such as Amex offers.
