Looking for a fast-track to elite status with Hilton Hotels? If you already hold status with another hotel chain, you could take advantage of the Hilton Honors status match. This grants you all the benefits of Gold Hilton Honors status for 90 days, and you can also complete a challenge to easily extend or upgrade your status to Diamond until March 2021.

How to get a Hilton Honors Status Match

If you already have the equivalent of Gold or Diamond status with another hotel loyalty program – such as Marriott Bonvoy, IHG Rewards Club or World of Hyatt – you’re eligible for a Hilton Honors status match. To request a match, simply fill in the form on the Hilton Honors website.

When requesting a status match, you’ll need to provide proof of your existing status (with a competing hotel) and proof of a hotel stay with that chain during the past 12 months. Do note that Hilton is quite strict about what is accepted and may request more information if the proof you send does not meet their criteria. Here’s what it says on Hilton’s website:

Acceptable forms of status validation include a screenshot of your current account status or your current and active membership card. Acceptable forms of stay validation include a screenshot of your previous reservations or hotel receipt, redacting any personal information other than your name and membership number. We accept .jpg files only.

You’ll generally be notified within a few business days if your status match request has been approved. You’ll then be able to enjoy the benefits of Hilton Honors Gold status for 90 days.

Hilton Honors Status Challenge

If your request is accepted, you can extend your newly-minted Gold status until 31 March, 2021 (at the time of writing). To extend your Gold status, you would need to stay at least 10 nights at Hilton properties within 90 days. Alternatively, if you stay at least 18 nights within those 90 days you’ll get a free upgrade to Hilton Honors Diamond status.

This requirement changed in August 2019. The Hilton status match was previously available directly to both Gold and Diamond, but now you’ll only receive Gold benefits during the trial. The requirement to complete the challenge has also changed from 4/8 stays to 10/18 nights, for the Gold and Diamond challenges respectively.

With Hilton Honors, there is a subtle difference between stays and nights. If you stay for four consecutive nights at one property, for example, this will only count as one stay. But if you stay one night in four different hotels, this would qualify as four stays. Checking out of a hotel and checking in again at the same hotel on the same day will still be considered one stay. But award nights do count towards status qualification with Hilton Honors.

Benefits of Hilton Honors status

The benefits of Hilton Honors status pack quite a punch and make this hotel loyalty program quite a competitive one.

Key Gold status benefits include 80% bonus points on stays, free breakfast and complimentary space-available room upgrades at selected brands. Meanwhile, Diamond Honors benefits include 100% bonus points, lounge access and space-available suite upgrades at some hotels.

Hilton Honors status match via Virgin Australia

Don’t forget that there’s another way to obtain Hilton Honors status without staying at a Hilton hotel! If you have Virgin Australia Gold or Platinum status, you can leverage this to acquire a status match with your choice of the Hilton Honors or IHG Rewards Club loyalty programs. Velocity Gold status with match to Hilton Gold, and Velocity Platinum to Hilton Diamond. Once matched, your Hilton Honors status will be valid for at least a year. You would still need to meet the usual requirements in the following year to retain your hotel status.
