How to Buy & Redeem Finnair Plus Avios

Finnair Plus is the loyalty program of Oneworld member Finnair. In 2024, the program adopted Avios, which is now the common currency of seven airlines including British Airways, Qatar Airways and Iberia.

Buying Avios can be a clever way to access cheaper flights, including in Finnair, Qantas or even Qatar Airways Business Class.

Although you can also purchase Avios from other airlines that use them, such as British Airways, it could make sense to buy Avios from Finnair Plus when it has a good promotion running. You could then redeem your Avios directly through Finnair Plus for flights on Finnair or other Oneworld partners.

As it happens, using Finnair Plus Avios is also currently the only way to redeem points for Finnair Premium Economy… at least, until Qantas opens these redemptions in late 2025. Finnair Plus even guarantees a minimum number of award seats on every Finnair flight for its own members.

Alternatively, you could transfer your Finnair Plus Avios to your British Airways Club account at a 1:1 rate. This opens up more options, particularly as British Airways has different partner airlines and charges different amounts of Avios than Finnair when redeeming for reward flights.

How to buy Finnair Avios

You can purchase or gift Finnair Plus Avios on the Finnair website.

The minimum purchase is 1,000 Avios, and you can purchase in increments of 1,000 Avios. The maximum purchase limit is 200,000 Avios before any bonuses.

Finnair charges EUR27 (~AU$45) for the lowest amount of 1,000 Avios. However, this price gets cheaper as you purchase more. Buying 100,000 Avios or more in one transaction (before bonuses) will get you the best price, at EUR21 (~AU$35) per 1,000 Avios.

Note that Finnair Avios expire after 18 months of inactivity in your Finnair Plus account. However, transferring Avios from one “flavour” to another counts as activity.

You can sign up for Finnair Plus on the Finnair Plus website and it’s free to join the program. Note that you will have to enable two-factor authentication to transfer Avios to and from Finnair.

Special deals on buying Finnair Avios

Since adopting Avios, Finnair has run promotions on buying Avios every 2-3 months.

The most recent offer launched on 16 June 2025. Until 30 June 2025, you can get up to a 40% discount when buying at least 75,000 Finnair Avios. This is a significantly better offer than the last one!

The current promotion is structured with the following discounts:

  • Buy 5,000-19,000 Avios and get a 25% discount
  • Buy 20,000-49,000 Avios and get a 30% discount
  • Buy 50,000-74,000 Avios and get a 35% discount
  • Buy 75,000-200,000 Avios and get a 40% discount

Note that to buy Finnair Avios with a bonus during this promotion, you must have had a Finnair Plus account before 2 June 2025. You’ll also need at least 500 Avios in your account.

If you’re not already a Finnair Plus member, sign up now to avoid missing out on future promotions!

Past offers on buying Finnair Plus Avios

The best ever offer we’ve seen on Finnair Avios was a discount of up to 50% in November 2024.

Here is a list of the most recent past deals:

30-70% bonus100,000 Avios3-7 April 2024

If you bought the maximum of 200,000 Finnair Avios by 30 June 2025, you would be paying EUR2,520 (~AU$4,460) or per around 2.23 Australian cents per Avios. For context, you could buy Avios slightly more cheaply with one of the top-level Avios subscriptions (see below).

Finnair also sometimes applies a targeted bonus to your account. However, you may not receive any notification about an offer that’s exclusive to you. You’ll have to check periodically for these on the “buy points” page.

Converting Amex Membership Rewards points to Avios

If you have an Australian credit card that earns American Express Membership Rewards points, you can get Finnair Avios without needing to buy them – albeit in a roundabout way.

You could first convert your Amex points to Qatar Airways Privilege Club Avios, and then transfer those Avios into your British Airways Club account. Then, you could transfer those Avios from British Airways to Finnair.

This is also a simple way to get a small amount of Finnair Avios into your account, in order to take advantage of the current promotion.

Finnair Avios subscriptions

Like British Airways Club, Finnair Plus also offers subscriptions that get you Avios deposited at monthly intervals into your account. You can pay annually to get two months for free each year.

These are the Finnair Avios subscription prices, according to the Finnair website:

Redeeming Finnair Avios

You can redeem Finnair Avios via the Finnair website. As Finnair is part of the Oneworld alliance, you can redeem on the following Oneworld member airlines:

Oneworld member airlines: Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Fiji Airways, Finnair, Iberia, Japan Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Qantas, Qatar Airways, Royal Air Maroc, Royal Jordanian, SriLankan Airlines.

Finnair also allows redemptions on LATAM Airlines, which is not in Oneworld.

Finnair Plus award prices are based on region-based award charts, with seperate charts for each airline. The airline publishes Avios rates for its own flights separately.

The best value with Finnair Avios is redeeming for Finnair flights. Finnair prices these below the equivalent Avios rates on British Airways or Qatar Airways, and other programs like Qantas Frequent Flyer.

You can add on a free extra flight if you’re starting or ending your travel in Northern Europe or Finland. For example, flying from Helsinki-Singapore in Finnair Business Class is the same price as flying Stockholm-Helsinki-Singapore, at 62,500 Finnair Avios.

Finnair does apply carrier charges on its own metal, although these are mild. The highest charge is on flights to Japan, Singapore and Los Angeles in Business Class, with EUR120 (~AU$198) added on to other taxes and fees.

Redemptions on Finnair partners are not as competitive, especially for long-haul flights. However, due to the region-based chart, there are some sweet spots.

For example, Finnair prices Australia-New Zealand flights on Qantas at the same 13,000 Avios for Economy and 22,500 for Business Class, including any connections. This means that a Perth-Brisbane-Auckland Business Class award ticket only costs 22,500 Avios, while Qantas charges 68,400 points for the same route!

The same pricing also applies to domestic Australian routes. However, Finnair Plus adds rather high carrier charges when redeeming Avios for Qantas flights.

Other sweet spots include Japan Airlines First Class on Singapore-Tokyo for 53,000 Avios, or Hawaii-North America in Alaska Airlines Economy Class for 13,500 Avios.

You can check out the full list of partner award charts on the Finnair website.

Finally, remember that Finnair is part of the Avios network. So, you can transfer to other airlines that use Avios if they offer a better price on a Oneworld partner redemption you want to book. For example, you can usually get better value when booking Qatar Airways flights using British Airways or Qatar Airways Avios.

Finnair avios (with bonus) - love 'em

I can confirm the part about AY Premium Economy being available only via Finnair Plus.

I ran across plenty of PE options from Helsinki to Japan (HND, NRT, KIX, NGO) in late July, when Mrs GO and Miss GO need to make their way back to Oz from two weeks in Europe. Timing-wise, HEL-NGO worked better for us than either Tokyo or Osaka and I managed to get 2 x PE seats with AY Avios. No other OW airline would show PE availability on AY, so it's still a little secret.

As luck would have it, I left just 500 Avios in my Finnair Plus account, so I might just have to take a look at this offer now.

There's a new offer on now, until 30 June:

Buy 75,000 Avios or more to get a 40% discount. This almost brings the price down to what you'd pay if you had a Finnair Avios subscription for the higher Avios amounts.

You need to have been a Finnair Plus member before 2 June 2025 and have at least 500 Avios in your account to take advantage.

Right now I have zero Avios in my Finnair Plus account - I have been a member before 2 June 2025.

Can I buy 1000 Avios for 27 Euro today to meet the 500 Avios minimum requirement, and then buy 200k Avios once the 1000 Avios hit my account?

I'm no expert but I think that should work. If you have any other flavours of Avios, like QR or BA, and you've linked your account to Finnair, there is a workaround, too. I can attest that it unlocks the current promotional offer if you send British Airways Avios to your Finnair account (free 1:1 transfer). I transferred 500 Avios from BA today to test it out and the offer became available to me after logging out of Finnair Plus and back in again, after the transfer. If you have Qatar Avios, you can send them to BA and then into Finnair.

I can confirm this works. I purchased 1000 Avios for 27 Euros, logged out of Finnair Plus, logged back in.

The 1000 Avios were credited to my account instantly and I now have the option of purchasing additional Avios at up to the 40% discount.

The real question now is figuring out is it actually good value to purchase 200k Avios to book business class flights with Qantas, flying Melbourne to Auckland.

Business class return fare looks to be $1600 on sale.

Same fare is 45k Avios plus $350 in carrier charges = no deal.

Back to the drawing board I suppose. Maybe HKG to VIE via HEL might be better value.

Yep, you can only crunch the numbers and see what works best hey.

Disregard if you already know the following, just sharing my 2-cents! Most of my research has been around international long-haul premium cabins to extract the most value. For a family member, I bought Finnair Avios last November in the 50% sale - 180k Avios for around 3k AUD. Sent them to BA and used for Qatar Privilege Club sweet spot: Aus - Europe for 90k Avios / way, off-peak pricing, in Business Class (Qsuites). Worked out at around A$1500 each way (charged in EUR so depends on EUR-AUD at time of purchase), heading over next June. The same cash tickets are coming up at over A$6000 one way. Through Privilege Club, there are generally 2 Saver/Classic cheaper award seats in Qatar J per flight Aus-Doha, at least, which is the limiting leg.

The challenge will be finding availability coming home later, in peak Euro Summer, when virtually no Saver / Classic award seats are released! We have the Avios to make up the increase in peak pricing, around 108k Avios one way, but availability is where it's at! Outside of Euro Summer, I think you don't have these problems. I saw an abundance of seats in May. And, of course, with the recent Australian Government travel advice being upgraded to the next level of caution for Qatar, who knows where it will go and if we'll need to cancel them next year.

Didn’t you have to pay the $500-900 “carrier fees” that are charged on top of the Avios ?
Still a good deal if you can find availability.

Yes, of course. I believe there are always fees / taxes on any award ticket (though they can vary, here's looking at you, Emirates!🧐). Upon redemption, $554.17. I know they upped these recentishly; in 2023, the same ticket cost me around $360 in taxes. Just sharing on the topic of buying Finnair Avios for a family member. 🙂
