Woolworths Devalues Everyday Extra

Since launching in June 2022, Everyday Extra has been a popular subscription program for Woolworths and Big W customers. For a small monthly or annual fee, Everyday Extra members can get bonus points and discounts when shopping at both retailers.

While it’s still an appealing proposition for many shoppers, Everyday Extra is sadly about to become a little bit less appealing as Woolworths increases subscription fees and reduces the benefits from 1 July 2023.

From that date, Woolworths will increase the annual subscription price from $59 to $70. Those paying monthly will continue to pay $7 per month, or $84 per year.

From 1 July, Everyday Extra members will also earn fewer bonus points when shopping at Woolworths or Big W. Instead of triple base Everyday Rewards points on all shops, members will earn double points.

Everyday Rewards points can be converted to Qantas Frequent Flyer points or redeemed for discounts off your shopping.

Everyday Extra members also receive 10% off one Woolworths and one Big W shop of their choice each month. Currently, this benefit can be used when shopping either in-store or online. But from 1 July, the discount will only be available when shopping in store.

Some AFF members believe the latter change may be a result of a system glitch which has been allowing some Everyday Extra members to claim the discount both online and in-store in the same month.

Changes to Woolworths Delivery Unlimited & other discounts

Woolworths is also making minor changes to its Delivery Unlimited subscription service from 1 July 2023. The minimum order amount required to get free delivery will increase from $50 to $75. Woolworths will also start charging bag fees on online orders.

Delivery Unlimited costs $15 per month or $119 per year.

From 1 July 2023, the monthly 10% shopping discount available to Woolworths Mobile and Everyday Insurance customers will also only be redeemable in-store, and not online. (Note that only one monthly discount is available to customers of both Woolworths Mobile and Everyday Insurance.)

AFF members respond to the Everyday Extra changes

With bonus Everyday Rewards points and discounts that more than cover the subscription price, Everyday Extra has been a popular subscription for AFF members.

Clearly, most people aren’t happy about the changes. But this impacts people who mainly shop online more than those who shop in-store.

Here’s what a few Everyday Extra subscribers said about the changes on the AFF forum:

That is very disappointing and the change in points may make me cancel my subscription. Will need to do some number crunching.

I’m not thrilled with that change as I prefer to shop online and collect. Much easier with two little kids who think trolley time is a great opportunity to beat each other up.
It’s like shrinkflation except the price is going up while the product is getting smaller….

The reduction and loss of flexibility to use the discount online is annoying, but little impact to me personally; just the 1 base point reduction. I use my 10% discounts in-store on shops that will no less than double recover the monthly sub cost (so, it has been a minimum $99 shop; which will need to become a minimum $117 shop – but usually they are more like $200 shops when I redeem them anyway). Rarely redeem Big W, and don’t use WW online.

I’ll still receive more value from renewing my Extra subscription than if I cancel it. I have not used a 10% discount on-line in the year that I have had the membership, so that is not bit loss for me personally, though could be for some people. I’ll still well and truly cover the annual membership fee just from my 10% monthly Woolworth discount. The lower points earning is annoying and frustrating, but still better than 1X points for non-Extra membership.

As an acknowledgement of the negative changes, Woolworths is offering some extra subscription time to anyone who subscribed to Everyday Extra or Delivery Unlimited before these changes were announced yesterday. Until 31 July 2023, annual subscribers also have the option to cancel for a pro-rata refund of any remaining time on their subscription.
