KrisFlyer Adds Scoot Redemptions from 1,500 Miles

Singapore Airlines’ KrisFlyer program has introduced a new fixed-price award chart for redemptions on its low-cost subsidiary Scoot.

Scoot redemptions are now available in Economy Class, with prices starting from as low as 1,500 KrisFlyer miles + taxes. That’s incredibly cheap, but there are several catches…

KrisFlyer’s new fixed-price Scoot award chart is available to view on the Singapore Airlines website.

The number of miles required is based on the regions you’re travelling between, and are priced as one-way. All redemptions are in Economy Class, as ScootPlus is not available to book at a fixed number of KrisFlyer miles.

There are two award pricing levels: Saver and Advantage. Like with Singapore Airlines redemptions through KrisFlyer, Saver awards are cheaper but have less availability.

Some examples of one-way award pricing include:

• Singapore-Penang from 1,500 KrisFlyer miles + taxes
• Singapore-Bali from 4,500 KrisFlyer miles + taxes
• Perth-Singapore from 6,500 KrisFlyer miles + taxes
• Singapore-Hong Kong from 6,500 KrisFlyer miles + taxes
• Singapore-India from 8,000 KrisFlyer miles + taxes
• Sydney/Melbourne-Singapore from 12,500 KrisFlyer miles + taxes
• Perth-Singapore-Phuket from 9,000 KrisFlyer miles + taxes
• Sydney-Singapore-Athens from 36,500 KrisFlyer miles + taxes

On the Singapore-Kuala Lumpur route, as an example, you would have the option to redeem KrisFlyer miles to fly with multiple different airlines. The cost varies, depending on which airline you choose:

• A Scoot redemption costs 1,500 KrisFlyer miles + AUD83.99 (but this does not include checked bags or any other extras)
• A Singapore Airlines redemption costs 8,500 KrisFlyer miles + AUD79
• Flying on partners Malaysia Airlines or Ethiopian Airlines (which runs this as a fifth-freedom route) costs 8,500 KrisFlyer miles + AUD91

What’s (not) included on Scoot award tickets

While the lead-in pricing seems low – and it is – these prices only include 10kg of cabin baggage! If you want to upgrade to a ticket that includes 20kg of checked baggage or flexibility to change the ticket, you’ll need to pay extra cash for that.

During the booking process, Scoot will also offer you the option to add meals and other paid add-ons.

Unlike other award tickets, you should also be aware that Scoot award tickets are non-refundable unless Scoot retimes your flight by two or more hours.

This is somewhat unique… and not in a good way. While there are many frequent flyer programs that let you book award tickets on budget airlines, these award tickets normally at least include checked baggage and the usual flexibility that comes with an award ticket.

For example, if you use Qantas Points to book a Jetstar flight, you’ll get 20kg of checked baggage automatically included. However, most Jetstar awards only require 20% fewer points than an equivalent Qantas flight. The difference in KrisFlyer miles between a Scoot and a Singapore Airlines redemption is much larger.

Is redeeming KrisFlyer miles on Scoot good value?

There are definitely some instances where it would make sense to use KrisFlyer miles for a Scoot award. For example, you could spend 4,500 KrisFlyer miles + SGD65.20 (~AU$78) on a flight from Singapore to Lombok:

It would cost $515.56 for an Economy Basic ticket on the same flight!

At 30,500 KrisFlyer miles + $287.94 for an Economy Value ticket which includes 20kg checked baggage, flying to Europe isn’t a terrible deal either. (That said, beware that no food or entertainment is included!)

The value won’t be quite so good every time. For example, on the Singapore-Kuala Lumpur flight we showed as an example above, it would only cost you $101.38 to buy a regular ticket:

Essentially, since the taxes on the Singapore-KL award ticket are $83.99, this means you’d be spending 1,500 KrisFlyer miles to save $17.39. This works out to give your KrisFlyer miles a value of 1 Singapore cent each, which is exactly the same value as you could already get when redeeming KrisFlyer miles towards a “miles plus cash” booking on the Scoot website.
