Qantas is giving double status credits, plus 5,000 bonus Qantas points, when booking a flight between Australia and New Zealand by 15 May 2021!

This promotion is valid for travel between 17 May 2021 and 28 February 2022. It’s open to Australian and New Zealand residents who register for the offer on the Qantas website.

All Qantas operated and marketed flights (i.e. with a “QF” flight number) between Australia and New Zealand are eligible for double status credits and bonus points, provided you’ve registered for the offer and travel within the promo period. You’ll receive 5,000 bonus Qantas points after making the booking (even if you haven’t flown yet), and double status credits after flying.

If you have a connecting domestic flight on your booking, unfortunately the domestic sector/s will not earn double status credits. Only trans-Tasman flights are eligible for the bonus Qantas points and status credits.

With double Qantas status credits, you could earn the following amounts of status credits for any one-way trans-Tasman Qantas flight:

  • Economy Sale – 40 (normally 20)
  • Economy Saver – 50 (normally 25)
  • Economy Flex – 80 (normally 40)
  • Business Saver – 170 (normally 85)
  • Business Flex – 180 (normally 90)

Status credits count towards your Qantas Frequent Flyer status tier.

As part of the Qantas Fly Flexible policy, you can also make fee-free changes to trans-Tasman flights booked until 31 July 2021, for travel until February 2022 (a fare difference may apply). You’ll still earn bonus points and status credits as long as your new travel dates remain within the promotional flying period (up to 28 February 2022).

Qantas’ last double status credits promotion was available only on domestic flights within Australia, and ran from 25-30 March 2021.

Are there any good status runs to New Zealand?

Unfortunately, this double status credits and bonus points offer comes a few days after Qantas ended its most recent trans-Tasman flight sale for flights departing from Australia. So, if you choose to book during this promotion, the flights may be a bit more expensive than you would have paid last week. But there are still a few good deals to be found.

The best deal from Australia would be a Business class journey from Gold Coast to Auckland for $1,059 return. This would earn you 320 status credits with the double status credits offer, in addition to the bonus points.

But there are some better deals available on return flights departing from New Zealand.

Until 11 May 2021, the Qantas “Love Australia Sale” is available on return flights departing from New Zealand. Specials include Auckland-Gold Coast in Economy for NZD349 return and Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch to Perth in Economy for NZD599 return (double status credits will not be earned on domestic connections to/from Perth).

With this sale, available on flights departing New Zealand, you could also fly Auckland-Gold Coast in Business for NZD899 return and earn 340 status credits. Return Business class fares are NZD999 from Auckland to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Cairns, and Christchurch to Sydney – all routes with Airbus A330 Business Suites available.

If you live in Australia, you may still be able to take advantage of some of the deals available from New Zealand if you plan to travel at least twice to New Zealand over the next year. For example, you could “nest” a return ticket departing from New Zealand into the middle of another return booking out of Australia.
