Article: What to Expect on AA72 from Sydney to Los Angeles

I noticed that pillows and blankets were specifically listed under premium economy, are these not available in regular Y, unlike QF?

Also,

The Main Cabin Extra seats are available to select for an additional fee, or are complimentary for passengers with Oneworld Sapphire or Emerald status, including American Airlines Platinum and Qantas Gold frequent flyers.

I was under the impression that MCE was no longer available to Qantas for free, only AA and a handful of other partners. Is this route an exception?

Edit: only asking as I might have reason to fly this in the near future!

Pillows and blankets are also provided in Y. Have updated this.

Thanks, that's a good pick-up. You are correct that MCE is only available to Oneworld elites from certain airlines. Have also updated this in the article.

Hmmm. Yes the AA F seat is novel in being able to swivel… but its not my favourite to sleep on :(

There seems to be a very slight incline on the seat back in bed mode, and the seat back is quite narrow… meaning you really don’t have much room to move without fear of falling off! That perception may not match reality, but it kind of feels like you’re sleeping on a gymnastics high beam, or a narrow park bench!

You're welcome, I was hoping I had missed something and it was available to QF elites once again!
I know it’s a broader topic but it does beg the question why QF was dropped from the MCE list in the first place - noting the AA/QF partnership???

I wouldn’t normally book AA whY anyway but onetime during a mis connect I had no choice but as a QF WP/OWE I received an extra legroom seat, comp meal and drink.

Also of note on the 777 is the small forward J cabin. I was booked on AA73 this year but due to a schedule change ended up routing through DFW - so still are yet to experience AA “long haul”…

Recently (May) I did AA72 (Y) returning AA73(J). As far as the soft product was concerned, Y was budget standard with bonus surly attitude, J was worse attitude and uninteresting, dried up, food.

Yeah, reviews suggest I dodge a bullet switching from AA to QF J flying back from the US recently but I still would prefer to see for myself.

eg: Shortly flying AY SIN-SYD. A bit like oyster, peeps seem to either love or hate the J seat. I love oysters and reckon I’ll enjoy the AY seat and service.

The $1400 return sale deals on AA ex-SYD looked interesting earlier this year but it looks like there is a reason.

Anything about the onboard wifi speeds? Based on other sites it is good enough for surfing the internet but not fast enough to stream. Might come in handy for a 13 hour flight.

I must say- “comfortable” is not the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of those business class seats. Awful padding and on every second flight or so, there seems to be something wrong (had a weird gap right in the centre of my back on three AA flights last year which delivers guaranteed back pain on arrival).

Saying that about the seat, I generally seem to mind AA J/F far less than many other travellers. I quite like the American no-salad-in-sight food (those ice cream sundaes are almost worth the back pain!) and the service… Well, it’s very “unique”.

Thanks @Berlin I will now be prepared for the icecream sundae. We did go on AA72 in business class a few years ago and Mrscove was happy with the flight.

Thanks for the review @AFF Editor . I've got this flight booked for March. I was able to find 3 classic award seats in premium economy. On the QF flights to LA I could only ever find a maximum of 2.
