If you travel overseas a lot, there are several reasons it can be beneficial to use a virtual private network, or VPN. As well as improved online security, VPNs allow you to circumvent geo-blocking and watch streaming services like US Netflix and ABC iView while you are overseas.

While you’re online, a VPN connects your computer, smart phone or tablet to a server in another country. This allows you to access content you may not be able to in your current location. It also adds an extra layer of security and privacy by encrypting your data and hiding your IP address (and, therefore, your true location). This added security is particularly beneficial when you’re connected to public wifi hotspots, such as in airports and hotels.

If you ever travel to China, for example, using a VPN allows you to access content which is normally censored or blocked in the country. A VPN can also allow you to access streaming content from your own country while you’re overseas. Many online streaming services block overseas users from accessing their content; connecting your VPN to an Australian server can circumvent this.

Do note that some countries, such as the United Arab Emirates, restrict the use of VPNs for certain purposes.

Special Offer from NordVPN

NordVPN, the world’s leading VPN provider as voted by thebestvpn.com, has a great deal on at the moment. You can get a VPN for 3 years for $107.55, or just $2.99 per month. This plan comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee, so you can get a full refund if you’re not happy with the service.

NordVPN allows you to access over 5,000 servers in 60 countries, and you can connect up to 6 devices at a time. It’s also easy to use, works with Netflix and contains useful features such as a “kill switch”, which disconnects you in case the connection with NordVPN’s server is lost.
