Virgin Velocity Status Challenge

Platinum status with Virgin Australia’s Velocity Frequent Flyer program could be closer than you think!

One member has received a “mini status challenge” from Virgin. This member has just re-qualified for Gold Velocity status for another year. Now, Virgin has promised to upgrade their status tier to Platinum if they earn an additional 21 status credits in the next two weeks. These status credits could easily be earned on a short domestic trip.

Our member bl5965 has already earned 952 status credits in the past year. Under Virgin’s loyalty scheme, members need to earn 1,000 status credits within any 12-month period to earn Platinum status. But with this offer from Virgin, our member will receive a status upgrade after earning only 973 status credits.

While others have not seen this offer before, one member says that Virgin upgraded their status after they earned only 986 status credits. This would seem to show that Virgin is relatively generous with giving away status upgrades. However, it does seem random. If you’re aiming for a particular status tier, you should still try to earn the required number of status credits and take the minimum number of eligible Virgin flights.

Meanwhile, some Velocity members have recently taken advantage of a different status shortcut. Many Flybuys members have received a targeted Explore Gold offer at some point over the past year. This offer comes with complimentary Velocity Gold status for 3 months. Gold status can then be extended for a year by earning just 80 status credits and taking at least one Virgin flight within the initial 3-month period. If this offer appeals to you, make sure you’ve linked your Flybuys and Velocity Frequent Flyer accounts!
