Major Velocity Changes Imminent?

Speculation is rife that some major changes to Virgin Australia’s Velocity Frequent Flyer program are just around the corner. Benefits offered to frequent flyers would likely be at the heart of the changes, with lifetime Platinum status among the many developments under consideration.

The speculation is the result of a recent survey sent to Gold and Platinum Velocity members which asked members for their views on a wide range of potential program modifications. Among the proposed changes were many potential extra Platinum benefits including surprise upgrades to Business class, extra reward seat availability, priority or complimentary taxi services, a guaranteed free neighbouring seat, family movie passes, partner Platinum status and even lifetime Gold or Platinum status. The potential for an overhaul of Virgin’s lounge network is also being weighed up, with added services potentially including table service, pre-ordered drinks and meals, and even a bag drop service at the lounge entrance.

Many of our members would whole-heartedly welcome the introduction of lifetime Gold or Platinum status but are cautiously optimistic about some of the other potential program modifications. It remains to be seen whether such changes would result in an overall increase or reduction in benefits for Virgin Australia flyers. Additional Platinum benefits would be welcomed, but some members fear that such a change would be accompanied by an increase in the amount of flying needed to earn the top status tier.

Alternatively, a new Velocity tier above Platinum may be created. But some question whether there is really room for a fifth status tier akin to Qantas’ hard-to-reach “Platinum One” level. Many Platinum Velocity members feel that they currently obtain too few benefits above what Gold members receive as it is, and believe that a new tier could further devalue their Platinum experience.
