Since COVID-19, there haven’t been many ultra-cheap international airfares available out of Australia. But a current sale from Vietjet Air is putting an end to that drought!

Vietnamese low-cost carrier Vietjet Air will soon launch non-stop flights from both Melbourne and Sydney to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. To celebrate, the airline has released “tens of thousands” of sale fares between Australia and Vietnam starting at under $270 round-trip! These tickets have a $0 base fare, with customers paying just the taxes, fuel surcharge and “Admin service charge”.

For example, you could fly from Melbourne to Ho Chi Minh City from just $151.62 one-way or $268.75 return:

This price is for an “Eco” fare which includes only a 7kg checked bag. It would cost $518.75 for a round-trip Economy “Deluxe” fare which also includes 40kg checked baggage, food & drinks on board, seat selection and the ability to change flights (any fare difference still applies).

The promotional fares from Sydney to Ho Chi Minh City, meanwhile, start from $293.46 return.

This sale covers selected flights on travel dates between April and 29 October, 2023. You would need to book by Monday, 20 February 2023.

Vietjet Air’s new flights to Australia

Vietjet Air’s Melbourne-Ho Chi Minh City flights will start on 31 March 2023 and operate three days per week as a daytime flight from Vietnam to Melbourne and an overnight trip from Melbourne back to Ho Chi Minh City.

The airline will then launch thrice-weekly Sydney-Ho Chi Minh City flights from 12 April 2023. These flights will operate overnight from Vietnam to Sydney, then return during daylight hours.

Both routes will be operated by Vietjet Air’s Airbus A330 aircraft with “SkyBoss” and Economy Class seating.

The SkyBoss seats are identical to the Premium Flatbed seats on AirAsia X. These are angle-flat beds in a 2-2-2 layout. This could be an attractive option if priced well. But at this stage, it would probably be cheaper to fly Singapore Airlines Business Class to Vietnam than Vietjet Air in a SkyBoss seat!

The Economy Class layout is also the same as that found on AirAsia X, with a tight 3-3-3 seating configuration. (Most other airlines use a 2-4-2 layout on the Airbus A330, so Vietjet Air’s seats are noticeably narrow.)

for a ULLC their business class looks quite good! Same seats as Air Asia, but food and beverage seems on par with business ‘lite’:

I have a feeling it might not be cheap if we look at the South Korean startup t-way that started flying. They're wanting something like $3,000 return for their premium economy with lie-flat seats. AirAsia is also expensive to Bangkok I think about 3000 + as well

Thanks MEL. I think thats a good estimate, now that I too put my mind to some regional comparisons.

The MEL-SGN flights are on sale now. Bizarrely, the Vietjet Air website is already advertising a sale that doesn't begin until Tuesday - $200 one-way for Y, including taxes.

The regular price seems to be around $570 return for the cheapest Y option.

SkyBoss comes in at $4,589 return, which I would say is not competitive whatsoever.

That's pretty typical of Vietjet to be honest.

They are only really good as a budget carrier, even their domestic skyboss is often comparative to Vietnam Airlines or Bamboo who provide a legititamte domestic business product, not just a blocked seat.
