Quitting the Frequent Flyer Game

After many years as a Qantas Platinum member, one frequent flyer has decided to give up their status and quit the frequent flyer game. Lamenting the gradual devaluation of the Qantas Frequent Flyer program, this member decided that the benefits of their status were no longer worth the money being spent to stay loyal to Qantas.

Now unchained from the shackles of status, this member looks forward to the freedom to choose flights on any airline. They will now actively chasing the best deals, and save even more money by using points to book flights more often. Although they will miss the Business and First class lounges available to Platinum-level members, this member is prepared to give up these perks in exchange for this new-found freedom.

As airlines continue to whittle away the benefits afforded to their frequent flyers, some members agree that the reasons to stay loyal to one airline are slowly diminishing. But other members still see the benefits of status as worthwhile and will continue to stay loyal in order to attain it.

Our members point out that there are still ways to enjoy some of the benefits that come with status, even as a disloyal flyer. Lounge access can be gained by purchasing a Qantas Club membership, or by using points to fly Business or First class. And, as a previously-loyal Qantas flyer, our member will still enjoy the benefits of Lifetime Gold status in their frequent flyer “retirement”.
