Why we like the NAB Qantas Rewards Signature Card

The NAB Qantas Rewards Signature credit card is a solid earner for people accumulating points with Qantas Frequent Flyer. You’ll earn 1 Qantas Point per $1 spent on everyday purchases, up to $5,000/month, and a bonus Qantas Point for every dollar spent on eligible Qantas services.

Although this card doesn’t come with extra perks like lounge passes to justify the $395 annual fee, it does have a great sign-up bonus points offer with up to 120,000 bonus Qantas Points available. Plus, the annual fee is reduced in the first year.

As you’d expect from a Visa Signature credit card, cardholders receive complimentary domestic and international travel insurance – as well as various other insurances.

What you could do with Qantas Points

See our guide to redeeming Qantas Points effectively for more information on how you can use your Qantas Points, including for rewards like flights and upgrades.

Complimentary travel & other insurances

This insurance is underwritten by Allianz and is available when you charge at least $500 worth of prepaid travel costs to your card. Other eligibility criteria apply, including an age limit of 90, which you can review on the NAB Card Insurance eligibility online portal.

Other types of insurance offered with this card include:

  • Interstate flight inconvenience insurance
  • Rental vehicle excess insurance (within Australia)
  • Transit accident insurance
  • Purchase protection insurance
  • Extended warranty insurance

Before using this insurance, we’d encourage you to read the PDS here.

Earning points

With the NAB Qantas Rewards Signature credit card, you’ll earn 1 Qantas Point per $1 spent on eligible transactions (excluding government payments), up to the first $5,000 spent per month.

On everyday spend between $5,001-$20,000, you’ll earn 0.5 Qantas Points per $1 spent. However, no Qantas Points are earned on amounts spent over $20,000 during any monthly statement period.

You’ll earn an additional 1 Qantas Point per dollar spent with Qantas, including on flights, Qantas Club membership, Qantas Rewards Store purchases and Qantas Wine purchases.

Points earned from this card will be deposited into your Qantas Frequent Flyer account after the end of each month. Qantas Points expire if there is no activity in your Qantas Frequent Flyer account for 18 months, but if you’re earning points each month this will keep your account active.

Of course, the Qantas Points you earn from this card also count towards Qantas Points Club membership!

Earning points for ATO & government payments

This card does not give points for payments made directly to the Australian Tax Office (ATO) or other government bodies.

However, you can use a payment service such as pay.com.au to pay tax and other bills with this card and still earn Qantas Points at the full rate!

If you’d like a credit card that earns points on ATO payments, you could also consider a NAB business credit card.

Using Qantas Points

You can use your Qantas Frequent Flyer Points towards a wide range of rewards including reward flights, upgrades, wine, hotel bookings, car rentals, Qantas Rewards Store purchases and even Classic Rail Rewards.

Classic Flight Rewards

Arguably, the best value ways to spend Qantas Points are on Classic Upgrade Rewards and Classic Flight Rewards. You can request an upgrade with Qantas Points on any Qantas operated and marketed flight, or book a Classic Flight Reward seat with Qantas or any of its many partner airlines.

Qantas Classic Flight Rewards start at 6,400 Qantas Points + taxes & carrier charges for flights in Jetstar Economy Class, or 8,000 Qantas Points + taxes & carrier charges for a Qantas Economy Class flight of up to 600 miles (e.g. on the Melbourne-Hobart route).

It costs 41,500 Qantas Points + $40 for a one-way Qantas Business Class flight from Melbourne to Perth.

Oneworld member airlines

Qantas is part of the Oneworld alliance, meaning you can redeem Qantas Points to fly with any of the other Oneworld member airlines.

In fact, a popular use of Qantas Points is the Oneworld Classic Flight Reward which allows you to travel around the world on Oneworld airlines with up to 5 stopovers. This costs 132,400 Qantas Points in Economy Class or 318,000 Qantas Points for Business Class.

Other partner airlines

Qantas’ other partner airlines include Emirates, Jetstar, Fiji Airways, El Al, Air France, KLM and LATAM Airlines.

Check the number of Qantas Points needed on any route for an upgrade or reward flight on the Qantas website.

Classic Flight Reward bookings can be excellent value – especially if you’re booking a seat in Premium Economy, Business or First Class. However, beware that reward seat availability is limited. It can be difficult to find seats on popular routes and peak travel dates, especially if you’re looking for multiple seats.

When redeeming Qantas Points for a Classic Flight Reward redemption, you’ll need to pay any applicable taxes & carrier charges in addition to the points. On some airlines, such as Emirates, these carrier charges can be quite expensive. However, other Qantas partner airlines have relatively low or no carrier charges including Fiji Airways, American Airlines, Alaska Airlines, LATAM Airlines, China Airlines and Air New Zealand.
