Of course still need to check the board or re-check your preferred app closer to boarding time. In BCN last month, boarding gate was not shown on departures board, but listed in a couple of apps, along with inbound plane. That all changed and about 1 hour before scheduled departure the new boarding gate was shown on the departures board, but some apps were a bit slow to update.

The biggest mistake airports/train stations make is assuming that people have been there before and know the local rules or variations. While this is true for a lot of people some are literally seeing it for the first time and trying to work things out, often in another language.

I would rather be waiting at a gate and have to move if it changes than be kept in the dark and have to run for it. One good thing is some airports show next to gate number the estimated walking time. this should be compulsory, so passengers have an idea.
