I was going to post something about that. I have SYD-MNL J seats with QF booked in March and by pure coincidence I was looking at redemptions on the weekend and found SYD-SIN now available on BA. Needless to say I booked those and have canceled the SYD-MNL flight.
I’d been looking for SYD-SIN for some time so happy to finally see some availability. Carrier charges nearly double but that’s fine

When the +++ including YQ is approaching that of a discount economy fare, it makes it tough.

I thought CX was a method for redeeming BA flights for far less in surcharges, but from the article it appears CX are charging the same amount in surcharges as QF. Is the CX method only beneficial on certain routes?

I think CX has lower charges in Premium Economy.

I find it strange, because on some routes CX is very much a sweet spot in J on the surcharge front:

EG JFK-LHR in J
80K Avios + AUD1330
61K Cathay + AUD376
61.2K Qantas + AUD877

If you have Points Club, it may be worth paying the extra YQ to book these over a QF flight.
Why?

Is the earning of SCs on BA award flights consistent across the board if you are Points Club?

Many years ago (and well before Points Club was a thing), I earned QF points and status credits on a SYD-SIN BA flight in F which was an AA reward booking. However, just before COVID, I did not earn points and status credits on the same flight (however, was instead an IB reward booking).

It’s nothing to do with points Club.
From time to time Award tickets, upgrades, re-booked cancelled Award tickets and IRROPS etc on various airlines including BA end up crediting as paid fares.

If it happens it’s a bonus 🤩

Fair enough. I was just asking why the original post from encryptededdy made the point that it was relevant if a traveller was in Points Club. Which seems to be different from what you are suggesting

"British Airways also tends to release more award seats closer to the departure date on undersold flights."

I certainly hope so!

I have a flight from LHR to SIN next month in PE (BA11) and have been checking literally daily for any new reward seats considering it will cost no more points (just taxes and a points change fee) if there are any new business reward seats.

My current 318k OWA itinerary includes the above flight, and has been re-calculated to 318k due to all other flights being in business, hence the keen-ness of getting a business reward seat if available.

I'm not a fan of the 2-4-2 and 2-3-2 business class layout, but it should be better than PE - also considering there are no more 2 x side-by-side seats on the side sections (ie. someone has taken the window seat, either by paying BAs ridiculous seat selection fee (AUD$120+!) or some other method).

This means both my partner and I will now have to sit next to another random passenger which was of course wanted to avoid, but wasn't willing to pony up another AUD$250 just to select seats.

At the moment there's not even any economy reward seats available on the day I need.

I've also been checking seats.aero daily too, all without success.

Here's to hoping BA release some more award seats in the next few weeks. I can then finally have a full business OWA!

I've noticed lots of availability to PVG and a smattering to HND, depending how many miles/sectors you've got to play with you could link this up (potentially) with CX or MH. If you're desperate to avoid PE of course.

I guess I am somewhat keen to avoid PE / upgrade that leg to business if available considering the remainder of my OWA has already re-calculated to 318k due to all other legs being in business.

If I could find business reward seats it would then cost no more in points other than a change fee and taxes hence the desire to change.

I've checked 2 x adults from LHR to PVG, LHR to HND, LHR to HKG etc, no business availability next month at all (unless I can't see it due to being QFF Bronze).

Guess I'll just have to slum it in Premium Economy (and also sitting apart as there are no more seats in the 2 seat side sections anymore and thus the only other acceptable option would be 2 aisle seats).
