Article: Australia’s Departure Tax Will Increase to $80

The Australian (paywalled) is reporting that this bill will likely not pass the senate, with the Greens joining the Coalition and One Nation in opposing the bill.

Oh well, then that is that.

Had it passed, I'm sure none of those parties would be open to repealing it had they come into power (or kingmaker, as the case may be).

Weird they’d block a bill for an increase so small that nobody cares … ?

Excellent move, Jetstar itemising all the ‘hanger’s on’ charges.

I recall buying an ‘at the counter, on the day’ , CDG -MAD, some years ago, and being astounded at the amount of parasitic charges and the relatively small number detailed as “Air fare”.

While some of the charges may be (debatably) justified, it’s particularly galling that one of the least palatable, and often surly, surcharge experiences, is a ‘Public Service’ operation for which the Government, along with the other Public Service operations involved in air travel, such as Air Traffic Control and Aviation Meteorology, has already had it’s hands deep in our income pockets.

ALL airlines should issue fully detailed summaries of the charges that make up the cost of our air fares, so that we might all become more educated as to the ‘real’ culprits next time we look at an air fare and instinctively mumble “airline’s … thieving baskets”.

I think they do already? On QF for example once you have selected the fare you can get the breakdown.

What we don’t want is the base airfare advertised, then the add-ons.

I guess ATM the variables are the base fare and the fuel surcharge. But it’s fairly easy to work out which ones are lower by searching googleflights… the cheaper the fare, the lower both of those previous charges will be.

Agree for the prices we pay for ‘security’ and ‘passenger movement’ and airport fees… we shouldn’t ever be having to queue for security etc. All lanes should be fully staffed to meet pax demand at all times.

Australia’s departure tax is set to increase to $80, meaning travelers leaving Australia may pay a higher Passenger Movement Charge. The change is intended to increase government revenue from international travel.
But will it be vitally important to get a receipt every time you go to the toilet?
