If you refuse to pay the tax ... will you be deported?

Also, Passenger Movement Charge sounds like a tax to use the toilet!
Concerns over coughulative erosion caused by visiting tourists?
Will it be vitally important to get a receipt every time we go to the toilet?

Does the airline, QF in my case, wear the additional cost for existing bookings in 2027?

At least the upside is that the tax remains a fixed price per person and they haven’t gone down the route like the UK of charging different rates per cabin.

Actually EDs, quick, mark this post with invisible ink or geo block it from the parliamentary triangle.

I think there is a clause in many terms and conditions and/or fare rules that allow airlines to collect additional government taxes that may be imposed after ticketing.

Must be a challenge to collect that though!

You’d expect maybe the legislation to apply to tickets issued from a certain date, once airlines are allowed to collect the tax?

The legislative instrument has a 18 month transitional provision proposed.

"The Bill also sets out transitional arrangements which support an 18-month transition arrangement for carriers to update their operations to align the calculation date of the passenger movement charge for tickets sold before the commencement of the Bill.

Under those transition arrangements, the existing $70 rate continues to apply where the departure occurs between 1 January 2027 and 30 June 2028 (inclusive), and the ticket was sold on or before the Bill receives the Royal Assent.

For departures occurring on or after 1 July 2028, the $80 rate applies regardless of when the ticket was sold, or the equivalent authority was issued."

In any case, this change has yet to be legislated.

Given our high wage economy, this $10 increase is chicken feed…

the rabbit out the hat is that it’s so low to start with. A little birdie above suggested that it involves a toilet, may be that is more spot on than a leopard.
I’d be lion if I was seriously roaring about it. We could argue the toss if it was like $400 per person, and travel was seen as a luxury

Is Australia one of the most-taxed countries?

We’ve already got the world’s most expensive passport (why? Because they can), and having to pay $80 tax to leave the country on top of that. We can’t exactly drive to another country. What a rort.

Thanks again, government 🙈

Airport tax...always a talking point. However the airlines are just as bad with ticket prices (and not just the tax) . Inflated prices when leaving on a ticket bought from Australia worldwide compared to flying to Australia from just about anywhere worldwide. Domestic ticket prices from one side of the country to the other can cost much more in business class compared to Asia to Europe as many of us know and have experienced. Australia....just because the people well they just seem to pay it!

They increased because they can and its an easy win (for them).

People on low incomes aren't affected, so no complaining from them (and lets face it they are less likely to travel) and for those who can afford to travel they know we will just accept it. Yes we dont have any choice but anyway....
