Save on Petrol with the 7-Eleven Fuel Price Lock

You may already know that you can earn Velocity Frequent Flyer points when filling up at 7-Eleven petrol stations across Australia. But did you know that there’s also a clever hack to save money on your fuel?

One of the features of the My 7-Eleven App is the Fuel Price Lock. This allows you to lock in the lowest price on a particular type of fuel from the five 7-Eleven petrol stations closest to you for up to a week.

This feature has several practical uses:

  1. If you see that fuel is particularly cheap on a certain day, but you’re not ready to fill up yet, you can lock in the price and return to the pump later in the week.
  2. If fuel is a lower price at another nearby 7-Eleven, you can lock in the lower price and then fill up at the more convenient location.
  3. If you’re travelling to somewhere with lower petrol prices, you could lock in a lower price before returning home and filling up there.

How to use the 7-Eleven Fuel Lock

The first step is to download and open the My 7-Eleven App. (If you haven’t already linked your Velocity Frequent Flyer account to your My 7-Eleven account, be sure to do this as well so you’ll earn Velocity points too!)

Then, select “Fuel Lock” from the footer menu and choose your preferred type of fuel.

After selecting “find my best local price”, the App will determine your location using location services on your smartphone. It will then check the current fuel prices at the five nearest 7-Eleven petrol stations to you, within a 250km radius.

If you’re happy with that price, you can lock it in. It will remain valid for 7 days, or until you next fill up.

The Fuel Price Lock will remain for 7 days, until used or until you lock a new price.

You can use the Fuel Price Lock to buy up to 150 litres of fuel in a single transaction. The discount will be applied when you scan the digital card in your My 7-Eleven app at the checkout. However, if the current pump price happens to be lower than your locked price, you’ll still pay the lower amount.

From 6 February 2024, the maximum discount you can claim using 7-Eleven’s fuel price lock is 25 cents per litre. If the difference between your locked price and the pump price is more than this, you’ll still save 25 cents per litre.

The savings can really add up

You’ll often be able to save a little money by checking for a lower price at a nearby 7-Eleven before filling up. But the savings can really add up if you’re travelling regularly. This doesn’t just apply to frequent flyers, but also truck drivers or anyone moving around between locations where there is a large variation in petrol prices.

I often find that fuel prices are around 20 cents per litre cheaper in Melbourne compared to the city where I usually live. So when travelling interstate, I’ll lock in a lower 7-Eleven fuel price and then fill up after returning home.

In one specific example, I saved $4.95 on 25 litres of fuel:

Other AFF members have been able to get even bigger discounts.

Clearly, if you’re travelling or using the App on a regular basis, the savings could really add up over time – especially if you’re purchasing a large amount of fuel.

You’ll still earn the regular 1 Velocity point per litre on regular fuels or 2 points per litre on premium fuels when using the 7-Eleven Fuel Price Lock.
