Velocity Frequent Flyer has launched a new 2024 bonus status credits offer for Virgin Australia flyers. You can earn between 45 and 125 bonus Velocity status credits by flying Virgin Australia multiple times over the next two months.

This offer works a bit differently to past promotions where Velocity has offered double status credits on all Virgin Australia flights. Instead, you can earn specific amounts of bonus status credits when flying 2-6 times with Virgin Australia between 29 January and 28 March 2024.

The maximum amount of bonus status credits you could earn from this promotion is 125. That’s half the amount of status credits you’d need to reach Velocity Silver status.

To take advantage of this offer, you would need to activate it on the Velocity Frequent Flyer website or in the Velocity App.

How does this new offer work?

This isn’t a traditional double status credits offer. With this promo, you’ll earn a fixed quota of bonus status credits based on the number of Virgin Australia flights you take between 29 January and 28 March 2024.

The bonus Velocity status credits you can earn are as follows:

Number of VA flightsBonus status credits
245
365
485
5105
6 or more125

Even if you activate this offer after booking and flying, you can still earn the bonus status credits. The flights just need to take place during the offer period and you must activate the offer by 28 March 2024.

According to the offer terms and conditions, an eligible flight for the purposes of this promotion is:

A one-way domestic or short haul international flight marketed and operated by Virgin Australia, booked through virginaustralia.com the Virgin Australia Business Flyer booking portal or via the member’s nominated Travel Management Company; and ticketed during the Promotion Period in a fare class that normally accrues Status Credits.

Reward Seats, codeshare flights and services on partner airlines are not eligible for bonus status credits.

You’ll receive the bonus status credits in a lump sum within four weeks after the promotion finishes. This means you’ll probably receive the extra status credits in April. Keep this timing in mind if you’re relying on those bonus status credits to renew or upgrade your Velocity tier.

How to maximise this bonus Velocity status credits offer in 2024

This promotion awards a flat rate of bonus status credits on any Virgin Australia fare that normally earns status credits. So, you can get more out of this offer when buying cheaper airfares.

Economy Lite fares are eligible for this offer. But you’ll earn a much higher base rate of status credits with Economy Choice tickets – for not that much extra cost. Economy Choice fares also count for eligible Velocity sectors, which you also need to earn status, whereas Economy Lite fares do not. So, booking cheaper Economy Choice fares would appear to be the “sweet spot” with this promotion.

When booking a connecting itinerary with two flights, this should also count as two eligible flights for this promotion. So, booking connecting flights (as is often the case when trying to maximise status credits) could help you get more out of this offer.

Two months only lol. A bit like the gift card offers, providers are testing the bottom of the market by seeing how little they can offer and still get customers to bite.

Oh I've already booked a flight a few weeks ago

What I do like about this offer is that the booking and travel period are the same, so there's not the same pressure to plan way ahead and book right now that you got with the previous double status credit offers.
Having said that, the bonus earning potential on this is much lower than in the past, so I don't like that. I'll be curious to see how (or if) QFF responds to this. Overall though, I'd say it's not a good sign for the future of double status credit offers. That particular type of promo may have run its course...

not the same pressure to plan way ahead

Given this 'promo' ends in 2 months, I'm not sure it is possible do anything 'way ahead' with it.

This offer may reduce the status holder heard - plenty of people got to gold and platinum on the back of dual DSC offers last year. Maybe this is a way to still offer something while pulling back the amount of status holders.

It's a pretty poor offering in comparison to a DSC offer - for example, one J class return flight BNE to MEL under DSC earned a bonus 160 status credits. Under this offer, that same J-class return would only earn 45 bonus, a reduction of 72%. The comparison for mutiple return flights is even worse.

Would've thought they still want to keep all the QFF status matched people trying to maintain the status.

In Y though it wouldn't be too bad. 6 golden triangle flights giving 125 SC would be more than double. But it caps the SC earning.

But, you can score 45 bonus SC for a short status run for a fraction of the cost, eg Syd-Ballina for $49 e/w in lite gives 55 SCs, up in the morning back an hour later, for $100. Doing that could easily help people retain gold.

Yeah, doesn't seem awful for people just doing a couple cheap domestic flights.
Is this correct?

6 x Lite = 5*6 + 125 = 155 (95 SC over 2x)
6 x Choice = 15*6 + 125 = 215 (35 SC over 2x)
6 x Flex = 25*6 + 125 = 275 (Worse than Double though)

Seems relatively cheap for some extra credits.

Wonder if a single booking with 2 connecting sectors counts as 1 or 2 eligible flights?

Everything around status is usually by sector so I would assume that would be 2 eligible flights.
