Qantas is offering a 30% discount off Classic Flight Reward seats to selected destinations in New Zealand, Fiji and the United States. The discount applies to Qantas, Jetstar and Fiji Airways award bookings made until 19 February 2020, for travel until 31 December 2020.
The 30% discount off Qantas, Jetstar and Fiji Airways Classic Flight Reward seats applies to specific routes and classes of travel, and only applies to the number of Qantas points required. You’ll still have to pay all taxes, fees and Qantas-imposed carrier charges in full.
The destinations on sale are Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Queenstown, Nadi and San Francisco. On flights to New Zealand and Fiji, the discount is available in all classes of travel. This includes Economy and Business, and also Premium Economy on Qantas Sydney-Auckland flights where this cabin is available. However, the discount does not apply to Business class flights to/from San Francisco.
If you’re flying to or from San Francisco, you’ll need to use Qantas’ Brisbane-San Francisco service. (You can connect via Brisbane to/from some other Australian cities and still get the discount.) This new Qantas Boeing 787-9 route launched last Sunday and operates on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.
You can also add on domestic connections from other Australian cities to connect with these international flights and still enjoy the Classic Flight Reward discount if travelling in the same class of travel all the way. For example, you can fly Qantas Business class from Perth to Queenstown (via Sydney) for 39,900 Qantas points (30% off the usual 57,000 points) plus $179.71 in taxes/charges.
(As a matter of interest, a Qantas Business class award ticket from Perth to Queenstown is available year-round for only 25,000 American Airlines AAdvantage miles + USD101.30 taxes.)
Eligible Qantas, Jetstar & Fiji Airways routes
Here is a full list of eligible routes for this promotion:
- Brisbane-San Francisco on Qantas
- Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane to/from Nadi on Fiji Airways
- Sydney-Nadi on Qantas or Jetstar
- All trans-Tasman flights (between Australia and Queenstown, Christchurch, Auckland & Wellington) on Qantas or Jetstar
With this promotion, most one-way flights between Australia and New Zealand are available for 10,080 Qantas points on Jetstar or 12,600 points on Qantas flights in Economy. However, the taxes & charges are quite high, making the value on some flights marginal. Qantas Business class may be better value, however, at 29,050 Qantas points during this offer.
The same pricing applies to flights from Sydney or Brisbane to Nadi. For example, you can fly from Sydney to Nadi in Fiji Airways’ brand new Airbus A350-900 Business class for 29,050 Qantas points + $92.08 one-way. (Melbourne-Nadi is a bit more expensive as it falls into a higher distance zone.)
The best value redemption with this offer is arguably Brisbane-San Francisco in Premium Economy class for 56,910 Qantas Frequent Flyer points + $351.20 in taxes and carrier charges. There is currently fairly good award availability on this route, too.
