Optus Offer: 60,000 Qantas Points for $396

Optus has brought back its popular $99 Qantas Promo Plan offer for a limited time, making it possible to earn 60,000 Qantas points for just $396!

Optus previously ran a similar promotion from 7-17 July 2022. The offer is now back and available to new Optus customers who sign up for the Qantas $99 Promo Plan between 1-5 September 2022 and stay connected for at least 3 months after activating the service.

How this offer works

Until 5 September 2022, you could sign up for a “Qantas $99 Promo Plan” from Optus at a cost of $99 per month. This is a month-to-month “SIM only” plan with no lock-in contract. If you sign up by 5 September, activate the SIM card when it arrives and keep the service active for at least three months, you’ll receive 60,000 bonus Qantas points.

The $99/month Qantas Promo Plan from Optus includes 200GB of data and unlimited calls & texts within Australia each month. It does not include any international calls or texts, or global roaming and is not available as an eSIM.

This promotional offer is not available in Optus stores or on the regular Optus website. It’s only available via the dedicated Qantas/Optus website.

Earning 60,000 bonus Qantas points with this offer

Optus says that customers who take up this promotional offer will receive all 60,000 bonus Qantas points “as a one-time point allotment” at the end of the third month from the service activation date. The points could take up to 7 days to appear in your Qantas Frequent Flyer account.

You can cancel your $99 Qantas Promo Plan at any time by contacting Optus, but won’t receive the bonus Qantas points if you change or cancel before receiving the sign-up bonus. According to the Critical Information Summary, you also won’t receive a pro-rata refund of any charges paid in advance for the remainder of the payment cycle when you cancel.

In practice, this means you would most likely need to pay for at least 4 months of usage in order to qualify for the 60,000 Qantas points. Although you only theoretically need to keep your plan for 3 months, the points will be awarded up to 7 days after the end of the third month – by which time, you may have already been charged for the fourth month.

Either way, that’s still a maximum cost of $396 to earn 60,000 Qantas Frequent Flyer points if you cancel before the end of the fourth month! Of course, you’ll also receive a SIM card and use of Optus’ mobile network –  including a huge 200GB of data each month – for as long as your service remains active.

The Optus offer website also states:

These plans are available to Qantas Frequent Flyer members who are adding a new Optus mobile service. If you are an existing Optus mobile customer, you are eligible to take up a new SIM Only plan e.g., sign up an additional mobile service or upgrade from a pre-paid plan.
Customers signing up to the $99 Qantas Promo Plan during the offer period are limited to 1 per Qantas Frequent Flyer number and 1 per Optus account.

Qantas’ partnership with Optus

Qantas launched a new partnership with Optus in November 2021, offering bonus Qantas points on sign-up and ongoing Qantas points earn for every dollar spent on three specific types of plans costing $39, $59 and $79 per month. These three plans are always available and the offers don’t really change.

The $99 Qantas Promo Plan is a limited-time addition to this line-up. But it works a bit differently as the only Qantas points awarded are from the one-time sign-up bonus after three months. This promotional plan does not include the ability to earn any ongoing Qantas points beyond this.

A good deal?

Regardless of whether you think the $99 Optus mobile plan is competitive, it would be hard to argue that 60,000 Qantas points for $396 isn’t a good deal.

You could get a higher amount of bonus Qantas points at a lower out-of-pocket cost with a credit card sign-up bonus. But if you can’t or don’t want to get a credit card, this would have to be one of the best value alternative methods of earning a large chunk of Qantas points.

By comparison, if you were to buy 60,000 Qantas top-up points you’d be paying $1,647. A cheaper method of obtaining those points could be to take advantage of Qantas Wine offers, but you’d still need to buy considerably more than $396 worth of wine.

As an example of what you could do with 60,000 Qantas points, this would be enough for a one-way Qantas Business flight or return Economy flight from Sydney to Indonesia (plus taxes & carrier charges).

Unsure how long this has been going but just popped up on my social media feed. Seems to expire on the 17th. $99/mth with the 60,000pts credited after 3 months. Seems a reasonable deal. I vowed never to go back to Optus after a previous issue but considering switching for 3 months for this offer. They have other offers with smaller bonuses for a smaller monthly cost but this seems the best by far.

EDIT: if this has already been posted somewhere feel free to delete or move.

Not the cheapest plan around (and no international roaming ☹️) but 60k for $297 min spend might be attractive for some. Just need to be able to switch to something afterwards.

It's certainly not as good as the Vodafone free-phone offer a few years back but I'm very interested. I'd be lucky if I used 100gb in 3 months let along 200 in 1 but there's definite value here.

Points will be awarded at the end of month 3 after service activation date if you stay continuously connected.).

You can cancel your plan at any time by notifying us. You will not receive a refund of charges paid in advance for the remainder of any payment cycle, unless otherwise provided in our standard agreement and subject to your consumer law rights.

The above two T&C's may indicate that a 4th monthly payment could be required. So maybe $396 for 60K points.

I strongly suspect this will be the case!

I am assuming a fourth payment would be necessary in order to get the bonus points. Other than that, 60,000 Qantas points for $396 seems reasonable?

A shame that there's no international roaming or even outbound calls from Australia to international numbers available on this plan, given the price.

To be honest, I find it a bit of a bizarre offer as it doesn't come with any ongoing earn of QFF points - just a big sign-up bonus. The incentive created is to cancel after 3 months.

I need a new phone plan anyway so I've signed up.

I have signed up too. Went for the e-sim option and asked for a new number. I’ll just run it on my existing phone and use for data, keeping my own number.

Not a bad deal. Trying to decide whether it's worth the effort to port my number from Telstra to Optus for 3 months for the purpose of this deal, or just chucking this in a spare phone as eSIM for a while.

You can just add it as an e-sim to your existing phone. You shouldn’t need to change your existing number assuming your current number is via a regular sim.

My existing SIM is an eSIM already and my phone can only have one eSIM active at once. I could move my existing SIM back to a physical SIM I suppose, but that requires finding time to head into the Telstra store :)
