Key Qantas Frequent Flyer Changes Slated for 8 December 2026

Qantas has set Tuesday, 8 December 2026 as the date that it will finally shut down both Qantas Points Club and Green Tier – changes it first announced back in February.

On the same date, Qantas will launch both the ability to rollover excess status credits and new, permanent ways to earn status credits without flying.

Here’s what you need to know…

Qantas retiring Points Club

Originally launched in 2020, Points Club was designed to reward Qantas Frequent Flyer members who earn lots of points on the ground. Automatically unlocked by earning at least 150,000 Qantas Points during a single membership year – with at least 130,000 of those coming from non-flying activities – it comes with benefits including the ability to earn status credits on Classic Reward bookings.

You can still continue to earn Points Club until 7 December 2026. After this date, all existing Points Club members will continue to enjoy their benefits until the end of their next membership year. So for example, if you’re an existing Points Club member as of 7 December 2026 and your Qantas Frequent Flyer membership year ends in April, you’ll remain a Points Club member until 30 April 2028.

If haven’t already qualified for Points Club during your current Qantas Frequent Flyer membership year, you might want to consider taking out a credit card with a good Qantas Points sign-up bonus or buying some cases from Qantas Wine that come with lots of bonus points. Just be mindful that only points that land in your Qantas Frequent Flyer account up to 7 December 2026 will count towards Points Club.

As we’ve previously reported, Qantas will introduce a new way to unlock the ability to earn status credits on Classic Reward bookings after Points Club is retired.

“Later this year, a select Qantas Points-earning credit card will offer members the opportunity to earn Status Credits on Classic Reward seat bookings for the first time,” the airline announced yesterday.

The end of Green Tier

Qantas originally launched Green Tier in 2022 as a way to encourage its members to make “sustainable” choices. But the program has been gradually watered down over the years, and no longer really seems to achieve its intended purpose.

This program too will shut down on 8 December 2026. Anyone who’s earned Green Tier prior to this date will have 90 days to select their preferred reward of either 50 status credits or 10,000 points.

Earn up to 140 status credits per year without flying

8 December 2026 is also the date that Qantas will introduce new ways to earn status credits on the ground.

As previously announced, members will be able unlock up to 140 status credits each year by earning at least 1,000 points in 10 different categories on the ground. Each category will unlock either 10 or 20 status credits. The “sustainability” category will effectively replace Green Tier.

Status credit rollovers

December 2026 will be the first month in which Qantas Frequent Flyers will be able to roll over 50% of their excess status credits each membership year into their next year, up to certain caps.

More changes coming in “early 2027”

According to Qantas, “the remaining status updates will roll out in early 2027, including the removal of separate attain and retain requirements, new Silver tier benefits, and Lifetime milestones.”

As previously announced, Qantas will remove the lower status credit thresholds currently offered to Silver, Gold and Platinum members renewing their existing tiers. The new targets for renewing status will become the higher “attain” thresholds. However, oddly, Qantas still has not revealed exactly when these changes will come into effect.

If Qantas indeed plans to increase its retain thresholds in early 2027, it ought to have already notified people who are mid-way through their membership years that they may be negatively impacted.
