Northern Lights and other European winter adventures

This week’s trip report has it all! Over 5 weeks ADLhighflyer recently visited Iceland, Norway and Germany. Between sightings of the Northern Lights this member enjoyed a Norwegian cruise, got stranded in a snowstorm, went dog sledding and even visited Germany’s most famous castle.

I’ve just arrived back from a 5 week trip covering Iceland, Norway and Germany (with a side trip to the UK to visit family) where I had an amazing time during my time away. Really recommend you give Iceland and Norway a go during the winter season if you get the chance.

ADLhighflyer may have flown 30 hours to get to Reykjavik, but they had booked a Northern Lights tour for the first night. Unfortunately there wasn’t much to see, so a second attempt was made the following night. This time, the aurora borealis put on a real show!

Following on from the first nights Northern Lights Spotting Tour which was unsuccessful, I was able to try it out again the following night for free. Having managed to work out how to use the manual settings on my new camera, I was ready to go in the event anything was seen…

The fact that I had seen the lights in only my second day on my trip – I was over the moon! However, the best light spotting was still to come….

A few days later, our member was lucky enough to see the Northern Lights for a second time during their tour of Iceland…

Later that night, the tour group was having dinner when word came through that there were lights outside. After quickly rushing to grab the camera and tripod, a group of us rushed down the road to the closest clearing which was dark to see what we could observe. The following pics were the best pics I got during my time away, and as you’d expect and very thrilled with the result. In all, we were outside for approx. 2 hours enjoying the spectacle before us.

This trip report contains some spectacular photos of Iceland’s night sky lit up in green.

On this trip, the long-haul flights were all in Business class with our member sampling Qantas, Cathay Pacific, Finnair and Icelandair. ADLhighflyer had also booked a flight with Air Berlin, but the airline went bankrupt before the flight took off!

Iceland was just the first stop on this European winter adventure. You can read the full member trip report on the Australian Frequent Flyer forum: The land of Iceland, Norwegian Coastal Cruise and a touch of Germany!
