Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) is offering a new status match to its EuroBonus frequent flyer program, including for Qantas and Virgin Australia frequent flyers. With this, you could potentially enjoy SkyTeam lounge access and other elite benefits for almost three years!

SAS joined SkyTeam in 2024, subsequently launching an awesome promotion to earn one million EuroBonus points. Now, it’s offering to match status held with competing airlines, including all the way up to its top-tier Diamond status.

There’s no flying challenge to complete with this match. You’ll just need to pay a fee.

How does the SAS status match work?

The offer is open to elite members of a long list of airlines, including Qantas and Virgin Australia. Status holders with Singapore Airlines, TAP Air Portugal, Etihad Airways and SkyTeam airlines are excluded.

For Australian frequent flyers, the matching tiers and fees are:

Existing statusEuroBonus statusFee
Qantas Silver, Velocity SilverSilverEUR89 (~AU$144)
Qantas Gold, Velocity GoldGoldEUR199 (~AU$322)
Qantas Platinum, Platinum One, Chairman’s Lounge; Velocity Platinum, BeyondDiamondEUR349 (~AU$564)

Velocity Platinum Plus isn’t specifically listed, although we’d expect this to qualify for Diamond as well.

You can also choose to match to a lower tier, so eligible Platinum members could select Gold and save EUR150.

To apply, you’ll first need to create a free EuroBonus account, if you don’t already have one. You can then submit your application on the SAS status match website.

SAS says you’ll receive a decision within three days, with approved status matches taking up to 10 business days to appear in your account.

There’s a limited quota for this promotion, so it could end at any time.

How to get almost three years of SkyTeam status

EuroBonus uses the date you joined the program to determine your membership year, similar to Qantas Frequent Flyer.

This status match gives you the remainder of your current qualification year, plus another full year of status. So, by creating a new EuroBonus account shortly before applying, you could potentially enjoy almost two years of matched status.

EuroBonus Gold and Diamond are both equivalent to SkyTeam Elite Plus, which comes with benefits such as:

  • Airport lounge access for you and a guest when flying on SkyTeam airlines
  • Priority check-in, boarding and baggage handling
  • Additional checked baggage allowance
  • Priority security at participating airports

Diamond offers some additional benefits when flying SAS, including complimentary drinks in Economy Class and more bonus points. But it’s not really anything to get excited over unless you’re flying SAS regularly.

But, as SAS has historically offered soft landings, you could get almost two years of Diamond, followed by another year of Gold. That’s potentially almost three years of SkyTeam Elite Plus benefits for EUR349.

Of course, there’s no guarantee that soft landings will be issued for everyone who gets this match.

It’s quite a broad SM but obviously pay to play.

Yep, I’ve just taken my Velocity Gold and paid the 199 EUR. There No point going for the diamond with my QF Plat as sky team elite plus is perfectly fine.

On my card worked out at AU$319 and it’s valid for the rest of your current euro bonus year plus 12 months so I’ll get about 20 months out of this.

Only thing I'll add is that I believe SAS use soft landings, so you'd get an extra 12 months of SkyTeam elite plus with a diamond match. But obviously no other benefits unless you fly SAS.

Good for a Sky Team membership, especially if you fly to in/around Scandinavia.

I'd rather pay an application fee than do a silly flight challenge.

How are you verifying these now? I got approved the other day but didn’t need to provide proof of QF WP. Is your team going onto a site like QFF, plugging in my details into a booking and seeing what status it comes back as?

Nope but it's all digital. Enjoy your status!

Yes. Obviously free is even better!

RE Challenge, if an airline/hotel gives you status upfront and the challenge extends it, then that’s not so bad.

Doing a “challenge” just to get the status isn’t for everyone.
