Redeem Qantas Points on Air Tahiti Nui’s Sydney-Papeete Flight

Air Tahiti Nui will launch non-stop flights from Sydney to Papeete, the capital of French Polynesia located on the idyllic island of Tahiti.

Commencing on 14 December 2026, the Sydney-Papeete flights will run twice per week on Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners. The flight time from Sydney to Tahiti is just over 7 hours, which is several hours faster than current options via Auckland. Economy, Premium Economy and Business seating is available.

While Air Tahiti Nui first announced this route in March, Qantas has just added its “QF” code to these flights. This has several welcome implications for Qantas Frequent Flyer members:

• By booking through Qantas on the “QF” codeshare flight number, you’ll be able to earn Qantas Points and status credits
• Classic Reward seats are now available to book using Qantas Points

Air Tahiti Nui Sydney-Papeete schedule

Flights from Sydney to Papeete will depart on Tuesdays and Fridays, while services from Papeete will leave on Mondays and Thursdays. Note that French Polynesia is on the other side of the International Date Line.

The schedule is as follows:

• TN302/QF3819 Sydney 20:20 – Papeete 06:35 (arriving same calendar day)
• TN431 Papeete 12:10 – Sydney 17:45 (arriving next calendar day)

Good award availability in Economy & Business Class

You can now redeem Qantas Points to book Classic Reward seats in Economy or Business Class on the Sydney-Papeete route. Award availability is pretty good overall, even in Business Class.

A round-trip booking from Sydney to Tahiti would cost 58,000 Qantas Points in Economy or 164,200 Qantas Points in Business per person, plus $277 in taxes & carrier charges. (The carrier charges are only $34 per round-trip booking, with the remaining amount being third-party taxes and airport charges.)

In theory, if you connect through from Brisbane, Melbourne or Canberra onto the Sydney-Papeete flight, on the same Classic Reward ticket, you won’t pay any extra Qantas Points. In practice, the Qantas website appears to be blocking people from booking sensible connections.

As the Sydney-Papeete Classic Reward flights book under QF flight numbers, Qantas Points Club members would earn status credits. However, note that Qantas will phase out the ability to earn Points Club a week before these flights start operating.

Air Tahiti Nui offers lie-flat Business Class seats on its Boeing 787s. These aren’t the most modern or private Business Class seats in the sky, but they will get you to Tahiti in comfort.

Booking Premium Economy on Air Tahiti Nui

Qantas does not have access to any Classic Reward availability on Air Tahiti Nui-operated flights in Premium Economy.

However, Premium Economy seats are available for sale. The pricing for Premium Economy is actually quite reasonable, too. (In fact, at the time of writing, it’s $110 cheaper to book the Qantas codeshare on this route in Premium Economy than booking direct with Air Tahiti Nui.)

Lounge access for Qantas frequent flyers

If you book the Qantas codeshare in Economy or Premium Economy, beware that you won’t be able to use the Qantas lounge in Sydney – even if you’re a Qantas Club member or a Gold, Platinum or Platinum One frequent flyer. For some reason, Qantas has decided not to give lounge access for its frequent flyers when travelling on Qantas-marketed flights operated by Air Tahiti Nui.

If you’re in Business Class, you will have lounge access in both Sydney and Papeete as a benefit of your class of travel.
