Why do you fly QF (domestic)

I fly with QF because their staff both on the ground and up in the air have improved their service no end. I think that DJ(VA) has been left behind in service, scheduling and basic airline product

  1. oneworld means on other airlines (VA's partnerships worked in my favour flying Air NZ recently but it's not quite the same as having Star Alliance Gold)
  2. I don't feel like I'm in a LCC when flying in Y
  3. Schedules are usually suitable
  4. Consistent (in my experience), professional (and sometimes friendly) service
  5. Better offerings in the J lounge
  6. Much, much better website
  7. Must retain status to keep going to the F lounge :)

2 flights a day DRW-SYD (well until they went and cancelled some in the wet season)
usually cheaper than VA
minimum 1000 miles on short hops
regular Y seat is ok
ability to pre-select seat 13A/F on 738s with gold status
seat back entertainment on ~20% of 738s (and then main screens on the others)
free baggage and something to drink (and if you are lucky something halfway edible too)
if you call up for any reason you speak to someone you can actually understand (and who understands you)
decent award booking engine which actually shows reasonable (albeit slightly pricey) options on partner airlines

Don;t be too sure about the "meals".

QF now advertise NP Cuisine for domestic economy ... and the service seems to have changed accordingly. (cue warmed wrap/pie, serviette and a beer for a MEL SYD 6pm flight ..)
Hmmm. Still I guess a beer or two is better than nothing and helps pass the time. I know when I get the first beer and when they come back to collect trays I get a second beer and we are getting close to landing.

Not having a lot of fun sitting back in row 5 on the past few Virgin flights. It is only a 1 hour flight but the time does not pass and I do not feel comfortable.

(Don't you get a checked bag complimentary due to status on VA?)
I do not like the recent changes to baggage allowances and not going to have status all the time.

Put simply I like the fact that I do not need to worry about luggage with Qantas.

Everything above - and point 3 is a winner with me - VA (outside the golden triangle) are usually terrible times or with terrible connections and if things go wrong - well travel plans usually go pearshape.... (happened a few time now)

QFF Phone service is very good and quick (P1 phone service is even better).

Flying heavily in Y across this great land I have been to just about every destination QF andQF-Link fly (excluding the mining charters!) and there is more or less a consistancy in service which you receive which is also a comfort/reliability factor.

There are a handful of reasons why I don't always fly QF -
(1) they don't fly where I want to go (SkyWest territory...or routes like PQQ-BNE or NCL-MEL)
(2) If JQ or VA - VA will nearly always win - and even with this philosophy I can acheive Platinum with Virgin!
(3) Price differential is just too great - recent example OOL-x-PER QF $800 flexi-saver or VA $355 flexi....

Currently, but included checked luggage for non status PAX on Qantas domestic might go the way of the domestic dinner tray ...

True. That does appear to be the way the airline is heading which is a real shame.

All inclusive pricing is great. I hate add-ons....

We are reading!
Thanks for all the positive comments. We are always trying to improve so your feedback is invaluable.

Don't just read this one ... these are mostly from those that already fly QF (like me).

Have a close look at the equivalent VA thread .. that's what you have to beat (you'll find me on VA too).

Every time in the past that I have found myself on anything other than QF. I ask myself how I ended up not flying QF. Not sure of the future. BUT for me QF represents a premium product in an increasingly budget world. In addition i have life membership of QP. So that helps. I don't like add on fares either. I enjoy the basic perks in Y that LCC's don't include.
More importantly as I age and become more discerning , I find the J offering more to my taste.
I think it would be a mistake long term to succumb to the temptation of trying to "be all things to all men" (people) . And the more obvious spin off for me is the benefit of status when flying international. I am WP. And it's not easy for me to maintain that level due to my lack of frequency and that I am also self funded

The customer service, I've only had one negative experience with a QF staff member. The rest have been good - excellent

I flew QF from BNE to PER the other day and was pleasantly surprised to see seat back IFE on the flight, first time in about 20 flights from memory.

If only they could provide that each time, it certainly makes the trip more enjoyable.

because their excess baggage is much much cheaper, literally saved me thousands a year

I made QF my first choice when DJ wouldn't fix my login problems on their website despite numerous phone calls and a few emails asking for help.

The things that I now appreciate with QF;
1. the website works! :) (most of the time)
2. widebody SYD-MEL.
3. good Domestic check-in.
4. usually no hassles with baggage policies.
5. usually good customer service on the phone.

Sorry Serfty, I sent feedback complimenting them on the beef pie (I was given 3 of them). I rarely choose to eat QF dinners, as they are often curries & pasta. I got a chicken pie and about a bottle of J Sav Blanc (in Y) last night, very nice. I guess that's why I prefer QF.
