Im a WP. So the route I take regularly, I get op-ups to J 25-30% of the time. It seems they happen on the route around 50% of the time. Easy to tell, with the boys who are all excited to be in J.
I was wondering, how do they decide who gets the opup? obviously its status, p1 first, then wp, sg etc. but how about when there is say 5 WP and only 4 opups left?
How do they pick between WP's to opup? is it on check in timings (I honestly dont think its this, just a thought, but I checkin religiously 24 hrs before), fare class? (always full flex on that route),
So how do they decide between the 5 WP?

Every QF FF has a commercial value rating which in most cases would determine who gets the opup

Actually, Chairmans Lounge would trump everybody as they are an almost given op up. Then WP, etc...

One would presume that Yield Management, when going through the flight loads ~ 24 hours prior, will look at how many seats are still available an hold over any they think may be able to be sold. Then within each status band, there is an economic value assigned to each pax (higher for fare bucket paid, frequency, etc). I would presume this is how they decide.

Anyone in Yield Management want to spill the beans...I think not

So you are saying that every member of QF FFs is effectively ranked individually? Wow. I was thinking its some arbitrary factor like who checked in first, or who was on a higher class of fare.
So what there is an algorithm and associated database running alongside everytime they request an upgrade to tell who is of higher status within the status bands? Seems kind of a bit much, what else would they use this for? direct marketing of campaigns?

Serch this forum for the words "Proactive Onload".

Every PAX on every flight indeed gets a rating.

I didnt mention CL as its highly unlikely there are any CLs on that route, or even P1s. Its frequented by roster types. Even on a weekly roster of 5 days on 2 days off you cant get to P1, even on full flex fares. Unless you fly business to and from - which there would only be a very very small amount of people. a handful at best. I work for one of the biggest contracting companies up there and out highest staff still fly Y.

Any good business rates or values their clients, whether obvious or not. The Parato principle at work.

They would be using both. For requested upgrades, it's a little different - it is all based on status level, then time you joined that status levels' queue. So a Bronze who put in their upgrade request at T-30 days is trumped by a Platinum who puts one in at the same time. Then another Plat member coming in at T-7 is still ahead of the Bronze member. Status matters...

Sorry, I was talking about op-ups only - freebies. Its only a 2 hr flight, so would never waste points on a J upgrade.

However unlikely, it may happen from time to time - if not on your route, others perhaps. Management do visit (particularly when international management are in town an they are showing them the facilities).

They take private jets up. It's only us scum workers who fly on a public airline. I know, as I built two airports up there. One time part was surfaced to fly in the boss's private jet well before we had CASA approval for the runway to be used. Fun times.

Most UK companies are gold standard when it comes to loyalty. They have the data and know what to do with it. You just need to look at Ba, Tesco or the telcos. They spend millions on data warehousing, analytics and analysis of information.

Can't say I understand the Qantas system. I'm running at 25% upgrade rate with Cathay compared to 1% with Qantas.

Chicken-feeed, baby!!

I worked for a US company that ranked every single UK postcode (maximum 17 addresses) by socio-economic status and on sold the data...and this was 1995!!

QF - and Australian businesses - have no idea!

Entrails...or Roo Entrails to be precise.

66mins before each flight AJ stirs a cauldron of Roo Entrails in his Mascot office and "envisions" the QFF numbers of the Op Ups.

That he only ever picks P1s and WPs is the biggest Mascot mystery since Bogle/Chandler.

**If you think I'm yanking your chain, consider the likelihood of the logical: QFIT have devised an algorithm that consistently rewards the deserving...yeah, thought not!!

I was surprised to get a family op-up to J this week on BA. I have no status with BA other than a blue account I use for award searching. Both me and the wife are WP but I didn't think that would count for much with BA.

Perhaps Nigel still has deference to OW that Alan considers old (bowler)hat.

Heard from pretty reliable sources that CX op-ups takes status into consideration but SEQ is just as important. The bigger the number, the higher the chances. I had 3 upgrades out of 4 from CX during my last holiday, missed out on the first one eventhough Y was overbooked by 16 seats as I checked in too early (T-3).
