Jump to the front of the queue for the new Qantas Card

It's not a credit card, it's a stored value card - you have to put money onto it first.
And points are only earned on overseas spend. This much they have said.

Quite likely it won't be usable for purchases in Australia at all.

That was my impression too - like a Travel Card. Not sure whether usable in Oz or not.

Yes, i agree with medhead about those fees. I have a travelex card that I haven't used for over 12 months. It had around $75USD in it. On my last statement which was for the year, now only around $40 on it. The devil is in the detail, and those damn fees!

Hmmm not sure about that.

The email I got sent said that:

As announced earlier this year, the new Qantas Card will carry a new payment technology called Qantas Cash™. Qantas Cash will give members the opportunity to earn points when spending their own money on the card at home, online and overseas. Qantas Cash will only be activated once a member applies and is approved.

From my understanding "home" means Australia....

Is there anywhere that it specifically says that points are only earnt on overseas spend ?
Can someone link/quote me?

If that's the case I might have to de-register lol.

You cannot pay off a credit product with another 'credit' product (which includes Debit cards).

For example, you can't pay off your Amex account with a MasterCard/Visa, be it Debit or Credit.

I believe this is part of the financial services legislation.

So I highly doubt you could pay off your credit card with Q Cash, unless it allows BPay from the card, but that would most likely not be eligible for points earn.

You can pay off a credit card with a credit card but only once. Do it as a balance transfer which if you shop around can be had for 6 months at 0%

...I might just register. Nothing to lose I suppose.

My read is slightly different.

It appears to me to be a Debit card where you have to load your $$$ on first before you can start using it (and then earning QFF points in the process).

So, you will lose the 'credit' part of the usual cards.

Who amongst us is using a Debit Card for everyday spend?

I suspect not many.

I see no benefit at all with this card:

1) Who would want to have surplus money floating in a card where you may or may not use it;

2) We have no idea of this card's earn rate.

Will it be 3:1 for supermarket, 5:1 for petrol or just an enhanced 0.625:1 for everything ?

3) What's its fees structure ?

Until it can be shown to be better than WOW EDR, I will stay on the sideline.

Not everybody in this world needs, wants or qualifies for a cc. While I'm happy with my CBA Amex/MC combo for points, I prefer to use my own cash to pay for everything, even though I pay the cards in full each month.

I suspect as a Debit Card it will have some use for people!

I use a visa debit. Particularly if I am purchasing something online, or I am in a country not renowned for credit card security.

The main reason I choose to do this is I have quite high limits on my credit cards and my statements go to my accountant.

I don't check them as much as maybe I should, so using a debit card gives me good control.

I don't really need the points from a credit card.

Edit. My flights, rental car, hotel etc are 95% paid using credit card.

A prime example of where a card like this MAY come in handy, although as you say you don't need the points then maybe not for you. :)

One thing to consider is that sometimes debit based cards (pre loaded with your cash) sometimes don't have the same protection of misuse of your money that credit cards have.

If you report a fraud on a credit card then the company puts a hold on those amounts and you don't have to pay them until its been investigated. If you've pre loaded your own cash and it gets fraudulently removed, then it's automatically gone and you won't get it back for a long time.

I'm holding out for a different card, I'm waiting for unobtainium blue.

No interest in the card until they release full details on fees, charges and exchange rates.

As no figures have been released, no one knows.

I'm optimistic that they'll offer a great rate, which will force the banks to up their rates to compete, and thus they need to buy more points, and everyone wins, well, except for the banks. Though who knows what contracts they've signed with the banks stopping them doing this ;)

And by rates I mean how many points per dollar.

Struggling to use your Frequent Flyer Points?

Frequent Flyer Concierge takes the hard work out of finding award availability and redeeming your frequent flyer or credit card points for flights.

Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, the Frequent Flyer Concierge team at Frequent Flyer Concierge will help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I think the only queue will be the one at the card printers - QF must be thinking there will be a large "early adopter" or "ego" factor for saying "yes" 6 months early.

My understanding of the marteing was that everyone would essentially be forced to have the "Qantas Cash" version of the FF card eventually.

As such, all this activity is doing is choosing which cards get printed first? Or did I miss something?

Yes, everyone will eventually get the 'cash passport' version of the card.... but activating this feature will be optional.

So if you choose to have a 'dumb' FF card you still have that option, but for the feature plus 'cash version' - you can elect to activate the stored purse feature and get the additional benefits it brings.

They can force you to have the card.

The can't force you to take the financial products bundled in the card.
