Another Dubai fiasco [PAX deported after trying to enter with expired passport]

Or, don't be a loud mouth Westerner and then try to film immigration officials in a secure area....

Typical Guardian reporting, not telling anywhere near the whole story.
True, being a little less confrontational probably would’ve helped her but once they tested for alcohol she was gone. Most of the time in the UAE it’s fine but if you are breath tested for some reason and have a positive reading, you will be in trouble.

So what does this have to do with wine on the flight? Fake news?

Essentially, that is the sole reason The Guardian is reporting as to why the women was charged - clearly it was not.

In my reading of several articles, having a positive alcohol reading was the reason she was charged (which happened to come because of wine consumed onboard EK). They found out this because she was tested as a result of trying to film her argument with immigration officials over a lapsed visa. It did occur to me as to whether she was visiting Dubai for her business (link from another poster up thread).

Sounds like she asked for the book to be thrown at her, but it turned into a bigger book than expected.

Rule 1, 2, and 3....don't bring attention to yourself.

Some people ask for the book to be thrown at them. She seems to have gone for the approach of getting the whole library thrown at her.

It’s a dunghole stuck 1400-odd years ago, which only still exists due to oil.
Said dunghole has rules against stuff only a dunghole would have rules against; but if you’re going to a dunghole (especially one where they’re all keen for randomly killing people - which they all seem to be ‘cos that seems to be a key component in keeping a place as a dunghole) you don’t throw their dunghole-rules back in their faces.

Things are not always black and white in the world.

We really only have the woman's word that she was only arrested for drinking wine.EK and Dubai officials have not made any comment.

Plenty of areas in this (I guess) non-dunghole country could take a leaf out of the ME book with their treatment of alcohol, and it'd do those places plenty of good.

Do tell?

I’m guessing Australia is way too fueled by alcohol and is often used as an excuse when a crime has occurred.
I think it’s pretty offensive to call any country a dung hole.
Various Nanny State authorities in Australia have certainly use alcohol as a way to enforce their power, refer to the destruction of a healthy night-life in Sydney as a good example.

The offensiveness is kind-of intended, I don’t really have any respect for people who behave in the way that’s considered societally & governmentally normal in those countries. Being rich & as a result well-educated makes it even more repulsive.

LOL, when I was asked for ID on the night of my 40th .... I understood life was changing for the worse.

Alcohol is a very significant issue health and social issue/problem in Australia. We don’t take it seriously enough.

While this may be true, the fact that I’ve never been negatively affected by the social problems caused by alcohol, yet am negatively affected by the enforcement of rules relating to it, gives me cause for doubting the relevance of anything that’s been implemented to counter said social issues.

Ok, as a former Police Officer and then worked in the Drug and Alcohol Services Council I’ve formed my opinion based on my experience.

Thing is, when you’re in law enforcement or in emergency services, you see the worst of everything.
No police officer is ever called out to someone’s house when a group of 10-odd people have quietly consumed 5 bottles of wine between them over dinner & just have a good night & either stay overnight or catch taxis home.

And nor would they be called in Dubai. Unless a crime had been committed. Just as they would in Australia.

Just like the banning of Sudafed - pseudoephidrene, the law works to the lowest common denominator.

As with many threads here we seem to have gone off on a tangent.

Yeah. Seems to do that when people get the chance to bash Dubai. Even if they’ve never been there.
