Another Dubai fiasco [PAX deported after trying to enter with expired passport]

I have some "in depth" experiences with the tribal mores of the emiraties.
Many of their ways are indeed offensive to western ideals, but they are what they are.
Upsetting anyone in authority is counterproductive.. allasame many other countries.

So what does this have to do with wine on the flight? Fake news?

It's a click-bait headline rather than 'fake news'. The actual facts are noteworthy - you can get in to a lot of trouble for having alcohol in your system. And probably most people aren't aware of the seriousness of that. 'Fake news' would be a story where there isn't one.

What is it, something like 10% of the Dubai population are actually Emirati?

It's generally pretty obvious when you hear criticisms from people who have never been there. And those same people (and others) don't tend to hold the ruling elite to the same standards elsewhere.

If she only had a single entry visa it could have been a work visa if she visits the UAE regularly to perform cosmetic procedures as otherwise visas issued to nationals of Sweden are for multiple entries.

It states on the Emirates website that if you've already fully utilised your 90 day visa within the 180 day period that you're entitled to apply for a pre-arranged visit visa. The 90 day window must have expired and she obviously had not applied ahead of time for the 'visit visa' because "she just assumed" the other one was valid because she'd visited the UAE on more than one occasion using that visa.

EK checkin stuffed up as it was their responsibility to ensure pax had the correct documents for UAE although I can see they've probably overlooked the fact that the pax had already utilised their 90 day visit. They probably just assumed they could get another of those same visas for this visit instead of the requirement to pre-arrange the 'visit visa'.

Statement by the Attorney General of Dubai, regarding the case involving a Swedish national with her daughter at Dubai International Airport

Saturday, August 11, 2018
His Excellency Esam Issa Al Humaidan, Attorney General of Dubai, today confirmed that the Dubai Public Prosecution has completed investigations and closed the case involving a Swedish national who attempted to enter the UAE on an expired passport.

The incident started with the arrival of the accused with her daughter from London Gatwick Airport on board an Emirates flight. She attempted to enter the country using a Swedish passport, which had already expired on June 10, 2018. She was advised by the immigration officer that she could not enter the country with an expired passport. She then produced an Iranian passport, and was informed by the officer that she could enter the country by issuing a new temporary visa, which allowed a 96-hour stay, and had to change her departure flight according to the new visa.

Ms. Hollman refused angrily due to the additional payment fees the process would require, and proceeded to verbally insult the immigration officer and take photos of the officer via her phone.

A legal claim was issued against Ms. Holman with charges of profanity and photographing a government official at the border crossing, a restricted area. The woman and her child remained together in the airport security office for less than 24 hours while services were provided to them, taking into full account and consideration of her 4-year-old daughter. Her father received her immediately upon his arrival and they subsequently departed the country. The prosecution decided to drop the charges against Ellie Hollman and to deport her instead.

True, being a little less confrontational probably would’ve helped her but once they tested for alcohol she was gone. Most of the time in the UAE it’s fine but if you are breath tested for some reason and have a positive reading, you will be in trouble.
A very good reason to avoid this place like the plague.

I should have added "No thanks!" in previous post. There's nothing there that I couldn't do without and if I need to get to Europe I can go via USA or Asia. Don't care how many stops that takes to achieve either.

What's the bet that immigration officials only asked about the alcohol after the Iranian passport was produced?

So not a visa? A passport? That’s quite different.
As always, Devil in the detail. Important details. And no mention of the alcohol in the charges. She behaved badly. Possibly she was drunk. Seems like the only bad egg in this story was the woman and the media for reporting it so badly.

You really thunk that if you turned up to the USA border people with an expired passport and then presented an Iranian one, possibly drunk, getting abusive and then filming them is going to get you a happy ending? I’d say worse than what happened in this non story. Good luck with that. It seems in this story that the UAE has nothing whatsoever to apologise for.

Thanks for that, an expired passport is quite different. Sounds like a case of excess entitlement.

Expired passport AND no visa :).

Yeah, that'll do it. And taking pics of the officers in the immigration area, and the rest. I think much the same would have happened to her if she arrived / did that in Australia (assuming she got on board the plane).

So, not so much 'dunghole' country  behaviour, as pretty normal world-wide.

I don’t see that this incident upgrades the status of large proportions of the Middle East from ‘dunghole’ ... I guess they didn’t chop her head off in the airport in front of her kid.

It does show that people are willing to jump to the wrong conclusion at every possible opportunity and stick to that conclusion when the so-called facts are revealed as complete nonsense. And such extremes as the concept of Immigration officials ‘chopping ones head off’ doesn’t really help anyone’s cred.

I don’t expect (and yes I may be wrong) that the facts or lack-thereof in this case had any effect on anyone’s opinion of “that” part of the world, hence finding out the facts weren’t facts wouldn’t have changed their opinion.

Sounds as though you may need to avoid Singapore as well (Banned from QF (for a few months)), seems their authorities don't like people being rude & confrontational either....

Well Singapore does have a somewhat “Keep off the lawn or we’ll beat you with sticks” approach ... :)

Not only in Singapore, anyone walks over my luscious, healthy green Sir Walter and they'll get the stick treatment as well - I'm sure all those on the lawn pawn pages would agree :p:p

I don't care about the detail. What worries me is that I could possibly be drunk and in a taxi that has an accident and I get the blame because I had some alcohol in my system.
