Virgin Blue's 'Name the Airline' Competition

Had a very quick look at Qantas trademarks. Can't see themselves associating with Red for Aircraft - more associating with kangaroo etc.

Even Virgin Blue domestic utilises lots of red. Don't think Qantas has opposed that (or made any difference if they did)

Lets say DJ had used a white aircraft with a red tail featuring a white outline of a Koala. Then maybe yes they'd have been going too far.

However they've used a Silver aircraft with a red tail that has a group of stars on it. No association to any form of Australian marsupial. QF doesn't have the rights to everything that even slightly symbolises Australia.

I actually think its a closer match to a VS aircraft than it is to a QF aircraft.

Understandable given that the airline may be renamed 'Virgin Australia' if SQ sells their VS stake.

Are they serious?

V Australian airlines? Didgereeblue would have been better! So what does the V standard for?

Very Australian Airlines?
Virtually Australian Airlines?
Vaccuous ...
Vivacious ...
Vertigo (that may not work)

V(irgin) Australia if Singapore Airlines divests itself of its stake in Virgin Atlantic as has been mooted.

Conversely Virgin Blue could become Australia Blue, if Singapore Airlines invests that divestiture locally.

Are you sure? I know that the colours are different and all that but the Virgin group did change their logo a while back, and I think you guys have changed the Virgin part of your logo to correspond with that.

I found an old version of your logo to the same colour scheme.

There's a difference, I'm sure of it.

Regardless, I'm going to sound like an idiot anyway doubting the guy who actually works at Virgin Blue...:p

You most certainly aren't an idiot, it's a definite update to the new Virgin type.

Just because someone works for a company doesn't automatically make them acutely aware of every nuance of a the brand, you should not of doubted yourself it's a good spot of "Where's Wally" like proportions.

Wouldn't they be allowed the 'Virgin' licence in that case?

It's not exactly something DJ would want to let go, I'd think...

Allow, yes, Want?

...a complex situation, many variables, let's see what happens.

But Singapore Airlines appears to be putting pressure on various points -
  • Branson, via the public "Pay Back Time" announcement and
  • TOLL via the "launch" of Tiger in Australia.
I think Virgin Blue has a board meeting coming up sometime, and it will be interesting to see what comes from it.

I reckon DJ would've had the livery checked before committing to it.

Anyway, a little 'red-tail association' couldn't hurt...:p

Hmm I never thought of it like that, maybe they are trying to cash in on QF's brand presence in the US a bit.

I think they most definitely are. When the designers come up with the colour scheme, they would of known exactly what they were doing by keeping the tail red.

Indeed. Every design element will have a lengthy justification for it.

The V design looks like someone has taken a shot at the Qantas Roo with a shotgun and it has jumped off just as the shots hit the plane tail. This could have deeper meaning but I'd be drawing a long bow.

V Australia? Months of speculation and anticipation and this was the best they could manage....

If you think the new V Australia colours are a bit like Qantas', have a look at Air Asia...

Hi there

This is true, but if you were looking at it from the other side it would be correct. This is the same as the Australian flag on the rear of Qantas planes. It's actually backwards on the starboard side, but OK from the port side - just as it is when looking at a real flag.
