Very short Cathay Pacific Transit at Hong Kong airport

Im late to this thread but if the last sector has a short connection and checked luggage, it is sometimes advantageous for the passenger to make the connection but the luggage to misconnect - especially if the last sector is the going home sector

I'd rather the airline courier the luggage to my house than me having to wait at luggage carousel, green/redline at quarantine, schlepp through airport, then transport home😀

Yes the flight was cx298 madrid - hong kong 29/10 which was delayed causing my missed connecting flight cx 135 HKG - MEL on 30th Oct.
Experflyer does not reveal a reason. It had been recorded as departing on time but landing 103 minutes late.

Prime facie you’re eligible for compensation. Let’s wait to see the reason why, but regardless, it’s worth submitting a claim.

If your flight is eleigible the only reason I can see for CX to deny it is on the basis that the flight ex MAD was only delayed a short time. But that’s irrelevant, case law has established it is the arrival time at the final destination.

Hiw late were you leaving madrid?
Not very late , I’d say 10-20 mins and they were well aware that we’d arrive late at HKG as mentioned a couple times by the pilot

It's a bit strange. According to flightstats (attached) landing was 18:42 but did not arrive at gate until 19:43.

Anyway, start here:
Sorry to hijack this thread but I am hoping someone can pull Expertflyer information on CX294 on Oct 29. Also, hopefully some will find my experience helpful for the future.

I booked a KUL-HKG-BRU return flight on the CX website, priced at around A$3,800, combining it with MH flights using QF points. As a bonus, both flights to and from KUL were upgraded to lie flats after booking. The deal would be even better if I can claim 600 Euro under EU 261 and I think I have a good chance of success.

The return flight was delayed and landed exactly one hour late, at 7.35am instead of 6.35am, after we departed BRU late due to waiting for connecting passengers and later offloading some bags of pax that didn't make it. Originally, my connection time was 1hr 55min but an hour after take off in BRU, I had a message from CX claiming my connecting flight (CX723) was cancelled, which was obviously not true as that flight did take off. Instead, CX had rebooked me on the following:

CX759 to SIN, dep 9.00, arr 1.00pm
and now the highlight SIN to KUL on SQ116, dep 3.05pm, arr 4.20pm.

CX kept me in Business even for the SQ segment, maybe all MH flights were full. Anyway, I arrived in KUL at 4.12pm, whereas my original flight was scheduled to land at 12.30pm (and the flight actually arrived at 12.11pm).

Long story short, I arrived at my final destination more than three hours late, departing from the EU, am I entitled to claim EU 261 even though CX rebooked me? I will likely try anyway but curious on thoughts.

PS, connecting gate onboard did not work on any of my four flights.
PPS, I was promised a CX agent would await me at the gate in SIN, there was no one and I went to the transfer desk as the lounge could give me a boarding pass.

My connecting CX723 (on October 30)

Neither of those issues could be called "Extraordinary Circumstance". Since due to the misconnect, you arrived over three hours late, you should be entitled to EU261 compensation of €300/€600.

I just wondering… as the airline re-routed the passenger, and the passenger arrived between 3 and 4 hours later than scheduled, whether that drops the compensation by 50%, to €300?

The €600 kicks in for a delay of 4+ hours.

You are correct. The delay in arrving at the booked destination needs to be of at least 3 hours, but those between 3 and 4 hours may be eligible for 50% compensation.

I did not look at the specific timing of the actual delay reported.

well, what counts in this case? If we are looking at actual arrival times, the delay was 4 hours and 1 minute. If we are comparing actual versus scheduled, it is less than 4 hours, as arrival was at 4.12pm as opposed to a scheduled arrival of 12.30pm.

In any case, I lodged a claim and I can/ will update once CX has responded. Thank you to everyone who has commented.

It is scheduled arrival time of your original flight, compared to the actual arrival time of the flight taken.

The arrival time for the flight taken is counted when the doors open at the terminal, not ‘wheels down’.

Hi MEL_Traveller,

very informative, thank you. Flightradar does not publish that detail, they work off wheels down and given there was a wait of ten minutes or so for a gate, doors open might have been beyond the four hours after scheduled arrival. How can I confirm the doors open time of SQ 116 on October 30?

I think flightaware has gate time? Or at least it used to show taxi time?

But otherwise you file a claim, stating that arrival at the gate was [your best estimate]. They’ll come back to you with a different time if it’s not right. The. you can decide next steps.

Excellent idea with flightaware, thank you. Remembering that 12.30pm was my scheduled arrival time, apparently it took 23 minutes of taxi to reach the gate so I think the four hour delay is met, though let's see what CX says:
