Any one know if QF still only let you know if you are upgraded on international at check in or have they been doing it earlier? Have a request in from V to J on points to lax, am Club Gold

They may have it up on your FF profile upto 24hrs before the flight. For my last upgrade request, I found out 8pm the night before a 3pm flight.

Yeah, it will be reflected in your booking either on www.qantas.com.au or www.checkmytrip.com sometime before your flight.

Exact times are unknown, and unfortunately seem to vary quite a bit. Best indication I have is that most upgrades occur on the night before travel.

The process is quite simple. Qantas will waitlist in you in Business at X time. Your booking will show something like the following:

SYD-LAX Economy (Confirmed)
SYD-LAX Business (Waitlisted)

A few hours later, that waitlist will clear, and you will now be listed as in Business(Confirmed) for that flight if your upgrade is successful. Technically an upgrade could clear any time up until your plane door closes and departs, but you should have a good indication before you leave for the airport of your success or failure.

My experience is that it is shown on the My Bookings page between 12 and 24 hours before flight time. But as mentioned by others, there is no guarantee it will show at a particular time. Another indication is a change in your FF account balance.

I had an upgrade waitlisted between LAX and BNE earlier this year but it didn't clear. It seems the only way you can be sure you have the upgrade is when you see confirmed next to your booking.
I was surprised/disappointed that my upgrade didn't come through after seeing it waitlisted before going to the airport.
I didn't expect you would be waitlisted if there was little chance of an upgrade. I was told at check in that business class for the flight was oversold so it was unlikely there would be a last minute upgrade.

The likelihood of whether it will clear is unlikely to be known until close to departure. If a non status person requests an upgrade 3 months before departure for example, they could be 1st on the upgrade list however as time progresses higher status people may join the queue ahead of the non status person

Also how many purchased business seats will be taken is not going to be known till close till departure

The status goes to "waitlisted" as soon as the upgrade request is processed. This has no reflection on the likelihood of the waitlist actually clearing.

Thanks to all
will try to post a update to show what time it comes through or not.

I'm currently waitlisted on QF32 from SiIN to SYD on 10 March from Y to J. When I waitlisted, there were plenty of J, D and F class seats.. That was about 3 weeks ago.. Checked with expert flyer yesterday which now shows
F3 A3 J0 D0.
I don't like my chances.. This is where I have found expert flyer very useful. I chose this flight as it had the most free D class..
Now that I can see that an upgrade is unlikely I may consider flying back the night before to get home earlier - even if I have to travel Y

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Even without the upgrade, I would take QF32 over the previous night flight. At least if you are stuck in Why, it's a daytime flight

I think EF is great as an indicator of availability - but needs to be very heavily tempered by the timing of the request and status of the PAX making the request.

I am keeping an eye on a J->F UG I have requested for my last flight HKG-SYD - currently:

F8 A8 J9 C9 D9 I0 B9 H9 K2 M0 R0 L0 V0 S0 N0 Q0 O0 X0 E0

Stranegly no Y class travel... Looking ok so far - plenty of availability in J (shown for me by the D availability - they are still happy to sell D seats so much be lots of empty seats) which hopefully means lots of spaces in F still - I might make into a cabana finally at HKG :)

I my experince I have found that my upgrade clears between 12 and 24 hours prior to scheduled departure. If not cleared by then it hasn't (even though there have been reports of the upgrade subsequently clearing on occasion).

If the upgrade does clear you will know as per the means already posted (QFF points account balance decrease, Checking Qantas MYB or Check My Trip etc.).

After I have seen the upgrade to have cleared, I have been able to call Qantas and request a different seat to be allocated.

This is sound advice. I would much rather take a day flight if playing the upgrade roulette game. Go for the known rather than the unknown.

Upgrade came through between 7-8 PM about 14 hours before flight to LAx
System does work, thanks for the hints, points balance decreased etc

yes.. It's one of the reasons I chose the daytime flight in the first place.. Y in the middle of the day doesn't really worry me.

But then there's always the 'get home sooner' idea which always scores lots of brownie points with Mrs VT01 and the kids!

I just looked at the flight i am about to board on EF and it has J2 X9 ?? Sounds strange they would have lots of J upgrade/award seats and only willing to sell 2 of them.

I guess i will find out in a moment how many are on the plane.

Not really that strange to me...

Qantas do upgrades in a slightly weird manner. Basically the process is :

Waitlist all pax who have applied for upgrade to the upgraded class (Eg X in this case).
Release the number of upgrades available into the upgrade class (eg X)
Assign upgrades according to their formula.

So there should be 9+ upgrades on your flight from economy to business...

X is economy award seats. U is business class award seats.

Oops, I think I need to go to the penalty box for a little while :) What I said above still applies for the Business Award class - U.

Opps i was in la la land !

There was no free seats on the plane in J and the CSA said maybe 1 and she didn't see any upgrades on the manifest, maybe one, so all were paying.

It seems now they do know how you get there, there was a topic some time ago about if they were aware you were an upgrade, seems maybe they do. Of maybe its the way the print the manifests in other countries.
