Tiger airways simply the worst airline

chevinoz,

I feel for your bad experience but as others have said you get what you pay for and with LCC that is not much. A lesson learnt as I can see from your post.

I do need to ask though why would you ever put anything of substantial value or importance, such as your credit cards in your checked in luggage :?: That is just inviting another problem to jump out and bite you.

Tiger Airways is the worst airline I've ever had the misfortune of flying with! My critique is based on my experiences in over 30 years of domestic & international air travel.

At about this point I knew this was going to be a good one........

No matter how cheap it appears beware the hidden costs! Check-in fee! Oversized luggage fee! Overweight luggage fee!

Are these fees hidden ? I would assume that someone with 30 years of domestic and international air travel would know to check for extra fees with airlines.

Tiger Airways explains it all clearly to me

Last minute travel to Brisbane for the Vic School Holidays, Tiger was the only airline that had affordable (not cheap, cheap) seats available at that time.

Okay so you booked the cheapest airline possible. They were the cheapest for a reason.

Called Tiger customer service to confirm the departure terminal, answer "International at Melbourne Airport".

Why you would call for a question like that, I really don't know.

We arrived at the Tiger check-in counter 50 mins prior to departure to find that they were no longer checking in baggage. The "young" fellow behind the counter was not open to any reasoning or discussion re our plight, the only option given to us was to pay an additional $210 to be moved to the 5.30 am flight next morning.
You were late I would say... Once again Tiger Airways explains the times.

So there we were, 8.30pm & home was over an hours drive away. Taking into account the cost of fuel, toll charges & the 4am start next morning, we decided not to return home and so began our search for some affordable accommodation nearby. Having paid the $24 to get the car out of Long Term parking, we checked into a nearby motel 2 hours later, best rate $170, all for 5 hours sleep.

Ummm - An hours drive away ? That is really not too far at all, only have yourself to blame for the $170 here.

Arrived back at the Tiger terminal 4.30am next morning 90 mins prior to departure (Tiger reccommends 2 hrs). We'd already paid the extra $20 per passenger to get a 15 kg baggage allowance ($55 pp if paid at the airport). One bag weighed in at 15.3kg, they then proceeded to try and extort another $55 from us for the extra 300 grams. No way was I going to pay them another cent, so I unpacked the case on the scales & removed my diary & jacket which I was then allowed to carry on as cabin baggage at no further cost (WHAT A JOKE!!! 300 grams is 300 grams, whether it's in the hold or in the cabin. WHY THE FUSS?)
Tiger Airways explains it all again. As I keep saying with 30 years of domestic and international travel, I am sure you have had to abide by the stated rules on luggage before.

The guy beside us was about to kill the check-in chick. He had a carry-on bag that he'd taken on board many different airlines while travelling the world. Tiger was telling him that it was oversize by 3cm and were demanding he pay $55, he was not happy. Every other queue was held up with people unpacking suitcases at counters trying to reduce the weight of their luggage. How efficient is that? Especially given that most of the stuff removed is carried on board as hand luggage anyway. $5 of the $55 baggage fee is supposedly an administration charge...SURE!

Someone else with extensive domestic and international travel no doubt....

More people that cannot either weigh their luggage at home, or are too tight to pay the fees which are clearly explained Tiger Airways

Once we'd left the check-in counter we were in yet another queue, this time weighing hand luggage to make sure it was under 7kg. Once again, people were forced to wait while passengers unpacked their bags in the queue.

It's a budget airline, it happens!

Moving on, there was yet another delay while we stood in the queue at the security point. A very narrow & innefficient choke point.

Surely with 30 years of domestic and international travel you have experienced a delay with security before ?

Access to the aircraft is via the tarmac which was quite uncomfortable given the cold winter winds at Melb Airport.

A budget airline - You get what you pay for.

Once on board, it becomes apparent that the aircraft are not cleaned regularly, there is no in-flight entertainment and the aircraft are not fitted with in-seat radios or video screens. All food & drink must be purchased and they DO NOT accept cash or eftpos on board, credit cards only. I had cash but I'd left my cards in my luggage, I couldn't even buy the family a drink of water... WHAT A JOKE!)

So with 30 years of domestic and international travel, you pack your credit cards in your luggage.....Not the smartest thing to do that's for sure. Again with 30 years of domestic and international travel, I am sure you have traveled on aircraft with no video screens. As for in-seat radio/music, yeh it's a budget airline. Again having no mention of what is provided on-board on the website should give you an idea that nothing is offered.

Our itinerary had a seat booked for me including a 15kg baggage allowance that I'd paid for. Tiger would not allow my family to use the seat nor would they allow my family to use my 15kg baggage allowance despite us all being ticketed on the same itinerary. Once again, my wife had to unpack a jacket to bring a bag below 15kg. It turns out that they subsequently resold my seat & yet offered no refund.

No idea what you are on about here.

Lovestosteal makes some good points but overdoes it as usual. For instance :-

I looked on the Tiger website and took 10 minutes to find the Melbourne terminal information. It's not under Travel Info > Before you fly or Travel Info > At the airport, but instead you need to navigate under Flight Info > Where we fly > Select a destination in Australia > Melbourne. There you will see that the pop up for Melbourne lists it as "Melbourne International Airport (Tullamarine, T4)". The Tiger rep probably thought that the information in brackets was superfluous so didn't mention it, but of course if they had just said "T4" it would have been unambiguous.

Fees for excess baggage are the norm, not excess fees for baggage. Stinging passengers $55 for being 300grams over is patently ridiculous, but 6 pages of luggage fees on the website is also tantamount to baffling customers with BS. If they made it a bit simpler perhaps they wouldn't cause such stress. Here is one of the many examples they have to give on their website to try to explain it all :-

Example 2
Trisha is flying from Melbourne to Gold Coast and makes her booking at the airport. She is carrying 28kg of luggage with her.

Trisha carries 10kg in one bag as hand luggage for free. She also checks in one bag that weighs 18kg in total. Her airport check-in luggage charge is thus A$95 (A$55 for the 15kg standard luggage allowance + A$45 for the 3kg excess luggage charges).

Firstly a $95 charge for luggage that would be free on Qantas is possibly going to surprise even regular travellers. Secondly the information is wrong because the 10kg allowance for hand luggage must be split over two bags with a maximum of 7kg for each. If Tiger can't even work out the correct answers then god help their passengers.

So if they scaled back the baggage T&C's to something approaching their actual costs, the chaos factor at the airport check-in would diminish and then they wouldn't have to enforce the 2-hour luggage check-in rule. That must catch so many people out it's not funny. I assume this makes up the bulk of the stories on the TV show but alas I will never know because I will never fly them unless they change.

And does anyone refute that regardless of this Pax story, that Tiger ARE the worst airline in Australia?

You were late I would say... Once again Tiger Airways explains the times.

I'd be curious if he was at the check-in at T-50 or in the terminal at T-50. Seems an odd comment from the check-in guy.

Regardless on who was right or wrong, you won't find me flying with Tiger anytime soon, or anytime for that matter. I'll stick to QF/JQ and DJ at a pinch

I looked on the Tiger website and took 10 minutes to find the Melbourne terminal information.

But it's listed on the itinerary, there is no need to look at the website. And if someone is travelling without a printed itinerary or a copy of it on a hand held device, more fool them.

Fees for excess baggage are the norm, not excess fees for baggage .....
Firstly a $95 charge for luggage that would be free on Qantas is possibly going to surprise even regular travellers.

Excess baggage should not surprise anyone who has booked online themselves ...

To quote during the booking process:

repay any luggage and check-in fees now! Otherwise, airport check-in costs $15 and 15kg luggage allowance costs $55, plus any excess weight charges. Click here for more info

Do you have a bag to check-in?

And then it asks you to select an option from a drop down list. I don't know how anyone could be ignorant to this.

Ultimately when wanting to fly budget carriers and take advantage of lower fares, people have to take accountability for what they do, weighing luggage, paying attention to the online booking process, checking written itineraries etc is part of this. An expensive lesson learnt.

I know people who fly a couple of times a year and they cope OK with the whole process, perhaps it's the experienced travellers who have more difficulty with adapting to the Tiger approach?

I find it suprising that with your extensive 30 years of travel (international and domestic), your complaining about every little thing on your trip.
And really with that amount of travel, putting your cards in your checked luggage??

Must be a extensive 1-2 times every 2 years traveller.

I do think it is a bit harsh to go on about the 30 years of travel thing. I first step onto an aircraft 32 years ago and things have changed greatly in that time. About 20 years ago i drop a mate at BNE about 3 minutes before scheduled departure. Sure he missed the flight but they put hom on the next plane, no talk of buying new fares. LCCs, and tiger especially, are only relatively new things. Someone who is used to being pandered to by qantas for 30 years, even once a year, is going to have culture shock on Tiger.

Ohh and now you lot have got me worried about baggage for my tiger flight I thought it was one carry on bag only of 7 kg, not 2 bags.

Like anything TT, there is no leeway.

15.3kgs is above the stipulated leeway, and that is how they make their money by charging for the 300g.

The same goes for those on our favourite show Airways who miss the check-in by seconds.

As for IFE, it costs money, hence why TT don't have it. Not every DJ or QF jet has personal IFE so expecting it on TT is a bit optimistic;)

Not even DJ or QF board all of their flights through aerobridges.

They have a very defined line, and the problem lies when the customer who wants this line changed for them. If you want that fly Qantas or any other carrier that is happy to let customers muddy those lines a little bit. On the flip side you probably have paid for it already with the extra premium on your ticket price.

And as others have mentioned, why oh why would you leave valuables such as credit cards in your checked in luggage? They could end up anywhere with the ways some bags are tossed about. It is a naive mistake to make but one that could be a PITA if your cards did happen to get lost.

As for selling your seat at a premium, thats is again part of the LCC premise. Oversell, hope for no shows, and charge a premium for last minute flights. Its the Ryanair way of things;)

I find Tiger great. We just got back from Melbourne this past weekend and, using Jetstar Price Match Guarantee, saved around $150 off their prices and didn't even have to set foot on Tiger. Lets hope they continue!

Tiger is a ****ty airline but it's very cheap. If you want the very cheap you have to put up with it being ****ty. Otherwise pay extra and fly QF.

+1 and even better, when they price match you dont pay any credit card surcharge :p

This sounds like a bit of a put up job to me.

Just another airline trying to denigrate TT again?

Doubt it.just google the name.Doesn't appear to have any connection to airlines but it is scary what you can learn and i am no computer literate guy.

Thirdly, since when does $45 + $55 = $95?

Seriously, the site information is a shocker. For my trip, I didn't want to get caught out by any of Tiger's tricky charges, so wanted to confirm my actual onboard hand luggage limit. Do you think their site actually explains what it is?

No! They do give examples _if_ you are NOT travelling with check-in luggage, but not a statement of what the limit is if you are. While experience tells me other carriers have a standard base limit (whether you have check-in luggage or not), one thing LCCs do is charge for things that the others do not. Making an assumption that it was the same was dangerous, but all that I could do. As it turned out, that assumption was correct. However, it's a poor model of a large corporate web site for critical information.

Well just to add to the confusion. I double or triple checked the carry on allowance and realised that thte website has 2 tables, on for domestic and one for international. The doemstic one says 2 bags <7kg with total <10kg. Just check the pdf itinerary and that says 1 7kg bag and a laptop.

A consistent message might be useful, Tiger:!:

On domestic its a laptop and 1 Bag to 7kgs.

If you OLCI, dont think that you can get pass this aerocare attendant that weighs everyone's bags before going past security at a checkpoint. So if you are over they will send you back and gain $55 unless your clever and wear your carry-on :D

Its really starting to get ridiculous now, TT's margins must be thin and crave every bit of extra revenue.

Thanks for the clarification. I'll be checking in at the airport and have purchase checked luggage as I travel with 13.7 kg. So I'll be putting as much weith into my checked bag.

But if you look at the domestic table on their website. That says web check in is 10kg and 2 bags. Clearly a major inconsistency, but I will follow your advice

Tiger Airways

Ie the only way to beat Tiger is to wear a massive jacket with big pockets stuff with everything you needed. Then take it off put it at storage once onboard

Maybe they are actually changing the policy to match Jetstar?!
