The Qantas Newbie Questions Thread

Thank you @Seat0B, duly noted!

We'll be sure to get there for the early flight and fingers crossed they can move us.
Thanks everyone for your help so far. Hoping for further thoughts/confirmation before we change our flights...

We had booked the top option here - QF2282, QF444 and QF11 - which doesn't leave a lot of time in MEL and especially for our international connection in SYD. Per the advice here, we were going to turn up to LST for the earlier QF flight in the hopes they could move us and try to do the same in MEL.

I have checked today and this option has popped up with JQ from LST - SYD and QF from SYD - LAX (same flight as already booked). This would remove the additional flight and gives us a good amount of time in SYD, but I wanted to confirm:

1) Would the baggage allowance be the same as our current (all QF) booking or less given the LST-SYD leg is JQ? Partner is Qantas Gold if that makes a difference.

2) With this booking on two airlines (although JQ is obviously owned by QF), is it still considered one booking and we will be taken care of if the JQ leg is cancelled?

3) I started looking at the 'Change' capability of the booking and can't see the JQ748 and QF11 option there, only QF and FJ. I'm guessing this means a dreaded call to the Qantas call centre is needed? Or is it easier to just cancel and then re-book ourselves? I realise this will cost an additional 2,000 points but might be worth it.

Ideally I if I was flying won't change it.
There is a propensity for them to stuff it up.
As a linked PNR once you present your passport at LST, QF knows where you are.
Also as you have presented your passport at LST, you don't have to go to any counters at either MEL QFd or SYD QFd terminals.
Just transfer from your LST - MEL Dash8/717 to the gate for MEL - SYD.
At SYD T3 just get the bus at gate 15 to T1.
If you go JQd it will drop you off at SYD T2, which would need a public road TBus to T1.
QF T3 bus uses the internal road saving a lot of time.
I live in ADL and transit T3 to T1 lots to fly to NZ.
---
JQ is owned by QF but they are separate entities.
Take it from a yappy pooch, DO NOT change anything.

How do I find out the specific type of economy I booked on Qantas? (I was using the points calculator and it asked if I was flying discount economy, economy or flexible economy). I’m certain it isn’t flexible economy but I purchased it during a ‘Red Tail Sale’ so I’m not sure if it’s economy or discount economy.

If you go into your Qantas Account, and open up the booking, use the Manage link, you'll see the details of your booking and the Travel Class. I used points for the booking below, so it's X.

If you go to the Qantas Fare Code page (https://www.qantas.com/au/en/frequent-flyer/qantas-class-types.html) you can match your Fare Code against the Fare Type.

Thank you. It was hard finding this on mobile, seems like it’s a desktop only thing.

It shows the Fare Class on the Android App on my phone - although it's not immediately obvious. In the app I opened up the Trip, and down at the bottom of the screen is the Manage Your Booking link. That opens up the flight details, but you have to click on the flight details under the date, for the Fare Class details to show.

iOS app is showing similar.

I forgot to pick-up a bag after landing from an international flight in Australia

Should I file a delayed/lost baggage claim to re-unite? Other ideas (Calling QF suggested “you could go to the airport, but customs has to scan it and it could take 2-3 days”)
I'd go to the airport and ask around if it's not too much hassle. Call centre would be useless as they wouldn't know how each airport handles such things. Baggage claim could take ages to process as well.

How do I know what Qantas economy category the AA “Main Cabin” translates into (for Qantas status calculations) - Does an AA main cabin ticket equal Qantas “Economy” or Qantas “Flexible Economy” when talking about estimated status credits earning?

The fare class should be visible in MMB, then just look up the table.
The American Airlines bookings don’t appear in the Qantas app at all. I just booked those flights separately on the AA website and linked my QFF account with it (if there’s a way to get that AA booking into the app please tell me - prior to the major update bookings from other airlines automatically appeared)

Look at AA app or MMB.
AA use SABRE and QF use Amadeus, so different reservation systems.
Putting the e-ticket number in various OW airline manage my booking can sometimes show more info. But not all airline MMB can process an e-ticket number.

If Qantas has nothing to do with a booking on AA i.e. No Qantas flights and 001- ticket number then it is unlikely to show on the app.

I suggest you bring the booking up here:

When that booking is showing, copy the following and past this this link into the URL:

https://www.aa.com/reservation/printItinerary.do?forward=itineraryReceipt&isReceipt=true&anchorLocation=%2Freservation%2FfindReservationSubmit.do+aacomTripDashBoard_jsp&url=%2Freservation%2FprintItineraryReceipt.do

It should then bring up a page showing the fare buckets for each segment.

Ok if that is the case you should have received an e-ticket from AA via email. AA e-tickets clearly show the booking class of each flight.

Below is an extract from my last AA e-ticket.

Then just cross reference with the below table

I think I noticed this as well with the current v4.x app.
In the v3.x days, I had four CX flights that I had booked directly with CX (ticket number starting with 160), and they all appeared in the Qantas app automatically upon linking to my QFF number (though these did not appear on the My Bookings section of the Qantas website, and I don't remember if I could manage them from Qantas).
Doesn't seem to happen now in v4.x from the looks of it (currently running v4.3.x on iOS and Android).

If Qantas has nothing to do with a booking on AA i.e. No Qantas flights and 001- ticket number then it is unlikely to show on the app.
Based on this, I assume for a booking to appear in the Qantas app (v4.x) now, either of the following must be true (when the QFF number is linked to the booking):
  1. The booking contains at least one flight with QF flight number
    • For example: QF479 SYD-MEL -> CX178 MEL-HKG -> CX596 HKG-KIX would appear in the Qantas app even though it is ticketed by CX (160-)
  2. Ticketed by Qantas: ticket number starts with 081-

No, not necessarily. I have both QR and BA direct bookings appearing in my QF app (iOS version).

AA never appeared unless, as you point out - booked via QF or has a QF sector.

Bookings with those airlines that use Amadeus may show on the Qantas app, despite no QF segments.

As indicated, AA do not use Amadeus.

I have both QR and BA direct bookings

QF app:
Displays direct non-QF bookings on Qatar Airways, the airline that Qantas has such a strong rivalry with and caused a political sh#tstorm last year.

Also QF app:
Doesn’t display direct non-QF bookings on American Airlines, a partner they have an extensive network and loyalty joint venture with, on top of their oneworld membership.

IT not easily compatible.
