Thanks to all for your replies. I'll go ahead and do it now. It's it still a very good deal at that price.

I recall from the last share bonus there was a maximum total bonus of 50k miles that any one recipient could receive. Is that still the case?

So if A shared 50k with B the latter would receive 100k.
Later if C shared 50k with B the latter would receive only 50k.

Yes, each receipient can only receive 50k bonus max. The person sharing can share to as many people as they want.

The reason to use this promotion, if you are expecting a devaluation, is simple. It will reduce the individual point valuation across your USDM portfolio.

Say you have participated in a variety of previous promotions, mostly buy (1.882 US cents per mile), and some share (1.1135 US cents per mile), your total portfolio of miles might be valued at, say, 1.6 US cents per mile. So, as long as you are adding miles to your portfolio at less than the aggregated value of your portfolio, you are reducing the impact of any devaluation (even though you are increasing your exposure to it). Of course this doesn't factor in conversion rates if you are buying in AUD, which adds another layer to the equation.

Good point well made. It seems prudent for everyone to take into account the possibility (I think near certainty) of a devaluation and not be too disappointed if and when it occurs.

Arrghhh, I know I shouldn't have but did!!
Just over AUD$1000 to top up our joint stash by 90000 points - we're now sitting on 350K and 300K respectively.
I just cashed in 60000 points to get two return tickets from Sydney to Perth in QF J in October for 4 days in the Margaret River.
By my calcs using today's top up that award cost me (inclusive of booking fee and tax) about $200 each way per pax.
Almost on a par with economy sale fare prices and slightly (!) cheaper than the $1800 one way fare Qantas charges in J :)

There are some SWP-SWP J redemptions that are really worthwhile ..... even a simple SYD-NOU J return is very good value which I am tempted to book, just 'cos its cheap and we can ;)

Was thinking of doing this and meeting my sister who lives in Wellington NZ in Perth. Now thats a very good redemption value in J.

Not sure why, the SWP redemption rates have not changed!
Well I think it's more the case that they could do with no notice.

Now Australia to North America via North Asia is the same price in J as North America to North Asia. Do we think it'll stay that way?

Won't stop me sharing, agreed.

I was going to buy and sit on points till at least June and possibly as long as December for a Aus-USA-Eur-Aus for 110K pp that I want to book for 3 pax in 2015. I have no idea how that might get screwed up now.
My currently booked Nov/Dec SWP/Asia/USA/Caribbean trip has already been screwed up by AA's removal of free stopovers at international gateway cities on awards so I'm not in a happy/trusting mood anymore.

I might be a dingbat ... but does that mean you could book SYD-HK (stop over x nights) - NOU (dest.) - SYD?

Which site are you using to see SYD-NOU?

Haven't searched yet though it's possible.

Per the success thread;

Well, I'm obviously the first

2 pax, both in J

SYD-NOU-SYD, 21/12 to 29/12

30K + $150 in taxes each

10 min on the phone, all confirmed and ticketed and given both US Air and Qantas booking numbers straight away

a bit of trouble with their voice recognition system, it did not get Noumea (obviously has not been updated to reflect the new reality -:)) and wanted to send us to Delhi instead

Isn't this the 3rd time in 6 months, not really that much of a surprise!

As for being not sure, surely this is the benchmark for good deals, hard to turn down! Even allowing for some devaluation buying a J return for $1500 to Europe can only be described as a brilliant deal!

Yes, sure but risk of devaluation existed last week, frankly. I just think it's an emotional response of humans to assume because they devalued this week they will next month as well. Intellectually there's just no rational evidence to support this inference that this weeks devaluation makes one now more likely. In fact it's more likely they've made their devaluation and they will hold off for a while now.

They didn't change the price for us to get to North America. The change only made it worse for those wanting a North Asia to US redemption. That's unlikely to affect many people on here I would have thought, unless you're stacking award bookings inside one another.
