Background to this thread:

In a similar vein to the "Flight Availability / Upgrade Probability Help Desk" there has an increase in the posting of questions about specific seat allocation/availability on a flight. These are all valid questions and we all appreciate the efforts our members go to to provide answers.

The only drawback is that our forums can become "cluttered" with such queries. This tends to reduce the overall usability of our site.

This new consolidated thread is where you can ask questions about seating allocation/availability. Hopefully, this will reduce clutter and improve usability.

Guidelines for posting in this thread:

Please post questions about availability of specific seats in this new consolidated thread. Be sure to include the airline, flight number, Origin, Destination, date and cabin as applicable.

When answering questions, please include the original question. This will assist in readability and management of the thread.

Thanks all, I think for now I'm staying 1A on the 777 (because I kind of want to sit in the first seat and advice above doesn't contradict it being worthwhile) but I've moved to 2K on the A380. Really appreciate everyone taking the time to give me advice.
I would take row 2 on the 777 and row 2 or 3 in the a380. I think a bit of room between you and the bulkhead adds to the overall sense of space. And less foot traffic on the 777 as no one is really passing you to get to the WC etc.

Class of travel? Does it allow free seat selection..?

Two sectors, one is J, the other Y.

I assumed, perhaps wrongly, that the J would still be eligible for free seat selection as a OWE.
or God forbid it’s oversold! Does EF display the seat maps at least?

Yep. Issue on all of MH, QR, RJ and AY is that the button with the option to select just doesn’t appear. It’s very odd.

I’ve seen it greyed out, or saying “unavailable” in the past, but just not displaying at all across multiple sites, I just can’t figure out.

Have you tried CX? Once upon a time it could let you request window/aisle and then you’d get some random seat. But from then on, you could change to another.

Managed to select seats via the MH site tonight.

Glitchy and slow loading, but succeeded in the end.

No idea what the issue was earlier in the day.

Can someone advise me of the best seats on JAL 787 8 business class please for couple travelling? Not sure whether to have a window each or window and next to each other. All help greatly appreciated. First time on JAL. 1st leg MEL to NRT then NRT to HAN.

Hmmm … looks from various reviews & SeatGuru there may not be a simple answer … looks like they have 3 layouts, but dunno how to tell whether your flight has one of the ones where the window-seats are a suite (where the window seat can get out without climbing over the aisle seat) vs the ones which are just side-by-side.

Might be safe to choose the two seats between the aisles & know what you’ll get?
Or choose two window seats, and not chat with your partner & run the risk you’ll get a person next to one of you?

Thanks, Forg. Yeah, I'm having trouble working out which version I am on. I contacted JAL and they were prepared to book my seat, but a small communication gap ensued, and I thought I might touch base with AFF members. Thanks again. Stay safe and stay well.

Only two types do international, the other type is domestic only.

The way to tell the difference is to check the seat map of your flights and see whether there is a row 29, or it finishes at row 26 in front economy. If there is a row 29, you have a side by side. If no row 29, you have a suite (direct access).

If the latter, then take a window each. If the former, take a pair beside each other.

The SkySuite is better than the Shell Neo because the Suite is a lie flat whereas the Neo is not

However, it is not possible to guarantee that you will get one over the other - aircraft can change
The problem with SkySuite when travelling as a couple (and if important as a couple) is that one seat is set slightly ahead of the other

For the above reasons i would pick always the middle seats.

Thanks Franky. We ended up picking the middle. Stay safe Stay well.

2. I've selected seat 8A for the SYD-AUH leg on the 777 and seat 12A for the AUH-LHR leg on the A380. Is anyone who's sat in these seats able to comment on the quality of views I'll get? I'm particularly thinking about the A380 leg where the seat map suggests I might have its entire wing in the way, but having never been on an A380 I'm unsure if that's the case.

Hi all, it's been a while.

Please excuse me if this is the wrong place for such a request.

I'm Beginning the enormously difficult task of trying to travel to the USA to attend a biennial dermatology conference. I am a Gold FF with QF until the end of July. I am planning on heading to Buffalo NY to spend some time with a mate, (whose son has a similar skin condition to me). Our plan from there is to head to Albuqurque NM for the conference , which runs from Thursday June 27th - Sunday 30th June. It is likely that we will spend 5-7 days having a break together after the conference. Looking to head back to MEL around 5th-10th July.

Since I stay with my mate in Buffalo, accommodation isn't really an issue, (and I can work from OS), so my departure dates are quite flexible. I would be comfortable departing MEL as early as the first week of June if need be.

Flying, (especially long haul) is incredibly debilitating and uncomfortable for me unless I'm in Business Class. I have a severe genetic skin disorder, and the thin air makes my skin dry, painful and it becomes difficult for me to move. Last year I was upgraded from Premium Economy to Business from LAX-MEL and it was absolutely amazing for me.

I've typed out similar requests before, and have received some jocular replies such as "Don't we all want to fly at the pointy end?"

I've been through a lot of cough in this life, so it won't ruffle my feathers if you feel you need to be the jester here.

I don't care about short-med haul domestic flights within the USA, put me in the back, I don't mind. If I could fly J from MEL/SYD/BNE-LAX-JFK/PHL/ORD/IAD-BUF or MEL/SYD-DFW-BUF (assuming AA flies DFW-BUF), it would be brilliant.

I've spent a dozen hours looking at the QF website. I did see (I'm pretty sure) MEL-NRT-JFK on June 10th for 159,000 points?

Other than that, I am bamboozled by how difficult it is.

Under normal circumstances, I would lodge a request with Frequent Flyer Solutions, but they are unavailable atm.

I have been an expertflyer member from time to time, but I don't travel OS often enough to justify the cost.

Any suggestion/offer of assistance - small or large would be amazing, and I'd feel very blessed.

Thanks All.

If you are talking about June to July 2023, I'm afraid you left it too long. July-august 2022 would have been the best time to start looking for redemption tickets if your travel is 2023

If 2024 then the redemption tickets have not yet been released

There are no hidden tricks to getting redemption tickets - if they don't exist then no amount of digging will find them. It is always difficult as you say nonetheless.
