I'm happy to pay cash.... It's just not practical. My travel is usually so last minute that EFT/BPay are not suitable payment methods either. It really doen't leave much of an option.
Having just obtained one, I can also now avoid the $7.70 credit card surcharge for the cash componet of domestic JASAsIn the Qantas world, it means a debit mastercard if you are within 7 days of travel.
$7.70 for a $100 fare is a 7.7% surcharge.
Should be higher for a transaction like that, that's a 0.2% merchant fee which is far less than the real cost of the transaction
Should be somewhere between $250-$350
Credit card fees should be the actual CC fee charged by the bank, not just a flat fee
I know what you are saying..... My point is; Surely they make enough on a return MEL - LHR in First to absorb the credit card fee.
It's total rubbish IMHO.
I love how Boss, who probably benefits more than anyone else under the current policy ($30 on a $15000 first class fare is 0.2%) is still against it...
At the end of the day we can all thank the RBA which allowed the practice to start in the first place. Now they are trying to reel it back in.
Trying? Trying??? You have got to be kidding me.
What the ACCC achieves as a function of its purpose of existing (both in the sense of the organisation as a whole and the individuals which make it up) is barely 'trying'.
If anything, the RBA is probably further endorsing the practice. To put more bounds on the protocols and appearing to "police" it is hardly attempting to reel it back in.
If the RBA and the government were "trying" to reel in the practice, then they would be moving a new law to ban the practice of surcharging based on payment method altogether. And standing up to the retailer groups who will inevitably complain that their members are entitled to surcharging as such. That's trying.
ok maybe i should have added the word "appearing to try".
It was the RBA's changes that allowed merchants to legally add the CC surcharge, and now that it is out of control they are appearing to do something about it...
