Of course, there's that way around these fees with Qantas, but it does tend to restrict booking options/complexity.

Re: Qantas denies pocketing $100 million from card surcharges

One of the annoying things with online search engines like Zuji, STA and webjet, is they keep insisting on including Jetstar legs from Aus to SIN when searching for flights to FRA/LON.

Re: Qantas denies pocketing $100 million from card surcharges

I'm happy to pay cash.... It's just not practical. My travel is usually so last minute that EFT/BPay are not suitable payment methods either. It really doen't leave much of an option.

In the Qantas world, it means a debit mastercard if you are within 7 days of travel.

Having just obtained one, I can also now avoid the $7.70 credit card surcharge for the cash componet of domestic JASAs:)

$7.70 for a $100 fare is a 7.7% surcharge.

As much as I love QF, they are really spinning the BS.

I work in the credit card industry and QF are making a bundle on the merchant rates; given what I see cross my desk for large and medium organisations. I know one large organisation (still much small than QF in size and revenues) that only gets charged 0.77% for all cards inc Amex & Diners.

As a small business owner I can tell you that I am charged 0.99% for all my Visa and Mastercard transactions. No fixed amount and no minimum charge.

QF, I call BS on this one.

QF might not be making $100M on the fees but they are certainly charging more than what they are paying.

Re: Qantas denies pocketing $100 million from card surcharges

Should be higher for a transaction like that, that's a 0.2% merchant fee which is far less than the real cost of the transaction

Should be somewhere between $250-$350

Credit card fees should be the actual CC fee charged by the bank, not just a flat fee

I know what you are saying..... My point is; Surely they make enough on a return MEL - LHR in First to absorb the credit card fee.

It's total rubbish IMHO.

At the end of the day we can all thank the RBA which allowed the practice to start in the first place. Now they are trying to reel it back in.

Or maybe it's just "choice" who seems to think that "credit" should be free...

I love how Boss, who probably benefits more than anyone else under the current policy ($30 on a $15000 first class fare is 0.2%) is still against it...

It's the absurdity of it that I am against. I mean surely Qantas is making enough profit on my airfare?

I'm also a self funded retiree who has another 22 years to go before I can touch my super!!

I have to live on my savings.

Nah, it's been mentioned before in another thread but is seems you initially book from "Winter Haven", Fl (GIF) to Vichadero, Uy (VCH).

Trying? Trying??? You have got to be kidding me.

What the ACCC achieves as a function of its purpose of existing (both in the sense of the organisation as a whole and the individuals which make it up) is barely 'trying'.

If anything, the RBA is probably further endorsing the practice. To put more bounds on the protocols and appearing to "police" it is hardly attempting to reel it back in.

If the RBA and the government were "trying" to reel in the practice, then they would be moving a new law to ban the practice of surcharging based on payment method altogether. And standing up to the retailer groups who will inevitably complain that their members are entitled to surcharging as such. That's trying.

ok maybe i should have added the word "appearing to try".

It was the RBA's changes that allowed merchants to legally add the CC surcharge, and now that it is out of control they are appearing to do something about it...

'appearing' would be the correct way of putting it. I did read somewhere that Qantas has said that they believe their current fee will comply with the proposed changes.

After having read the proposed chnages, it does look as though there is still plenty of wiggle room in determining what is the cost of acceptance. Will have to wait and see what the actual decision on change is, but I would not be so confident that the rule change is going to make much difference.

So we are left with a situation where the Qantas fee looks like a complete gouge on low end fares, and an annoying case of nickel and diming when you are buying a $10000 fare.

Re: Qantas denies pocketing $100 million from card surcharges

Somebody tell me that this in NOT just ridiculous!!

That's for 2 pax MEL - LHR next week. Is the $60 REALLY necessary??

Flights:$28933.44 AUD
Card Payment Fee: ($30.00 x 2 passengers)$60.00 AUD
Total paid this transaction:$28993.44 AUD

I agree - CC surcharges should be waived for ALL bookings on QF.com. The airline is making and keeping their commission from these fares (5%?).
