Predictions of when international flights may resume/bans lifted

I've been wondering what the Aus govt approach will be when/if NZ open its borders. In Jan 2021, the NZ PM indicated borders could open when "enough" of the population had been vaccinated and their rollout looks to be going to plan. It would be hard to imagine NZ accepting international tourism but not Australia

I think both the AU and NZ governments will have "discussion" about opening up to other countries. If one opens before the other is ready the other may end the travel bubble, so constructive communication will be in the interest of both countries. Travel between Australia and New Zealand is critically important to both countries.

This is what we need to see
Hold on. Just this afternoon he was saying how opening up borders up will result in 1000 cases a week and that would go against the zero cases strategy that Australia is aiming for.

I didn't hear that one. I think they've worked out if they don't hold out a carrot then young people won't bother. And why should they if there is no material benefit coupled with no covid.

The Prime Minister also laid out future plans to allow Australians to travel overseas for business and funerals and potentially quarantine at home, before allowing mass travel again. But he said the nation had become used to dealing with no cases and opening the borders would end the national cabinet's stated goal of zero community transmission of COVID-19.

That's mentioned in the ABC article. Some talk of reopening is a step in the right direction but not nearly enough.

No detail to clarify as to whether family reunion would be significant enough to get an exemption.

I think people would be pretty annoyed if having been denied an exemption to attend a wedding last year, they'd then be denied because it's not a wedding later this year or next year.

Well that means they open the borders for the 2% who have been vaccinated, so we are talking about the elderly, the sick and front line workers. How many in that group are going to be travelling and if there are government travel alerts will anyone be able to get travel insurance?

I reread the article again

ustralians who were vaccinated could also be allowed to return home and undergo quarantine at home or other "less stringent conditions" compared with hotel quarantine.

"That would enable Australians to travel first for business and those sorts of things, but ultimately if that worked well over a period of time and the data was showing that home-based quarantine was not creating any additional, scaled risks, that could lead to something more significant," he said.

"That is how we move to the next step."

But Mr Morrison said it would require the backing of the state premiers.

"If we were to open up, we would have to open up with an agreement that if there were cases in Australia that the rest of Australia internally wouldn't shut down because that would seriously damage our economy," he said.

Backing of the state premiers and not closing borders ? HAHAHA we are never opening up

Read the article. There's no talk of this border opening happening right now. It's several months away at least and by then there'll be way more than 2% vaccinated.

What my concern is that when they do start to open up the reasons to be allowed to travel could be too restrictive for too long but we will see.

Ok well several months and we may hit 10% if they really pull their fingers out which is there little indication of happening. Even at 10% you are still only looking at 1a and 1b. I don't believe they have any intention of opening up, this story combined with the fear mongering of a 1000 cases a week if we open the international borders is intended to give the impression it's all been given deep thought but the computer says no.

Good news indeed.

The key word perhaps is 'incentive'.

Maybe the PM was saving this up all along so he could use the prospect of travel as an incentive to get people vaccinated?

I think he also has to allow this to get Aussies home for Christmas... at least with home quarantine.

Qantas may not be far off the mark with 31 October, coupled with the proposals today for mass vaccination centres for under-50s from mid year.

I HIGHLY doubt that vaccine supply will be an issue...by June, anyone who wants AZ should be able to have it as demand will be so low due to people being cough scared of taking it.

Bascially you wanna travel overseas? Take AZ and good to go.

This is a pretty obvious tactic. As soon as the federal government start talking about opening the borders for travel and other things, they will pile the pressure on the states.

Imagine a scenario where NSW agrees to be reasonable and take overseas travelers without quarantine and all the other states say no? There will be a political reckoning coming for most of these so-called leaders. When the world begins to reflect normality, most of the population will expect normality themselves.

I can see this happening. Next year Gladys opens up, but McGowan re-instates the hard border in case any filthy foreigners dare cross to the west. The certainly won't fly in, Perth Airport will reduce back to intrastate only.

Getting sick of Scomo too, he just says what people want to hear but doesn't actually do anything. He should have brought forward the election, I think the longer this goes on the more people will vote Labour in.

id bet being closed to rest of AU and open to the rest of the world would be a win financially

I don't want this to turn in to a politics thread, but I am yet to see any sort of coherent plan from anyone for opening international borders. As always, it's easy to throw junk from the cheap seats (i.e. opposition)

i dont think its an understanding of risk i think its a massive overreaction and a blindness to the risks people run every day getting in the car / walking across a street / eating a meal cooked by someone else / getting stung by a bee / popping an ibuprofen / paracetamol / having a minor surgery performed / hell i'll bet there is a bunch of people who take would take an opiate if it was prescribed without a second thought and 1 in a million is no-where near that.

I cleaned the gutters today. Old Victorian with a high roof. Up on a ladder, leaning across and throwing stuff onto the ground. Half way through I realized I probably would have died if I fell off (look what happened to Chairman Dan when he slipped on the steps - at ground level), but that’s just a risk we take everyday.

Had a few glasses of wine tonight. Ate red meat. That’ll get me one day. But these are risks were prepared to take.

About 18 months ago, before going to Eritrea, I had the absolute hell jabbed out of me with vaccines that have as many side effects as the “Covid” vaccines do, but it was a risk worth taking.

Yet “breaking news” is somebody dying after receiving a vaccine? Millions of doses of this vaccine have been distributed and we can count on a few hands the number of deaths - yet we make it a big issue?

It’s incredible how even the most sane of people have totally lost track of reality during this “pandemic”. This is not Ebola. It’s a very mild virus that has a massive recovery rate. Realistic death rate is less than 1%, yet we expect a 100% effective vaccine with 0 risk?

You do realise even before you cleaned the gutters that getting out of bed you had a higher risk of falling on the way to get the ladder and dying right ;) Falling is a HUGE risk factor, so we should all just stay in bed.
