Moral of the story: I would call AA in the US and have them take a look at the reservation. It could be that they are allowed to charge the fuel fine in Oz, but not in the US, who knows? BTW, I found a good many AA reps at the SYD reservation office to be somewhat unhelpful and/or uninformed (same is true for UA res. agents there). If there is a way of reading a rule in a more restrictive manner, leave it to the Ozzie reps to do that. I will only call them to get the most basic info, certainly not to book or ticket a complex itinerary.
The pricing is not from Australia ; all pricing for the OW tickets such as OWEs/GLOBs/CIRCs are sent to Dublin. I called the AA ATW desk in the US to book a DCIRC22 and pricing was done and came out at
AUD7178 plus AUD233 taxes (total AUD7411). The normal price for a DCIRC22 is AUD7029 and AA has added AUD149 to the base fare in relation to fuel surcharges. The addition of USD55 to Transpacific/Transatlantic flights came in on 01/03/06
I queried the base fare with the AA agent at the ATW desk in the USA and they explained that the fare difference is due to fuel fines. Nothing to do with AA in Sydney
Even so, it is still much better value than booking through QF who were going to charge AUD7029 + AUD658 (AUD7687 ) .
