New Zealand Reports of the Virus Spread

But to all the Govts it seems a hard call. Even when it's clearly escaped. They took so much pride in being zero zero zero. Closed borders. We will Protect everyone blah. In SA we had zero cases before we opened - can only imagine the angst. But in WA, and certainly NZ its way beyond that now.
After a good 2020 (for NZ), the NZ govt/bureaucrats wasted 2021 & now 2022, by being slow in getting vaccination into the country (more than 100th in world roll out ranking) and slow with ordering RAT's. In mid 2020 the jabbing polices were slowed to match the very low supply, then speeded up when more supply become available.
Same with RAT order/supply. Pollies give themselves a pat on the back (in front of a TV) when supply lands. In many other countries people can easily purchase from many retail outlets (but not in Kiwiland)
in the South Island was ~year without a case, yet still had restrictions and events being cancelled. As are events being cancelled now.. The over zealous restrictions (in SI) for a year have worn thin, with far less support now. (when public support is needed)

Edit
There have been 13,606 new community cases of Covid-19 reported in New Zealand today, with 263 people in hospital. In a statement, the Ministry of Health said 9262 of the new cases were in the Auckland region. <snip.>
RATs are now used as the primary test at all community testing centres and the Ministry said people who use a RAT will get their results within 20 minutes, which will "help identify cases sooner, reduce testing wait times and minimise disruption to business and ensure critical services and infrastructure workforce can continue operating".

There were also six cases reported in MIQ today.

There are 13,606 new community cases of Covid-19 today.
There are also five people in intensive care units and 263 people in hospital, the Ministry of Health says.

Haven't really been following Covid in NZ so was a bit shocked to find out they had 12000 community cases today with 5 deaths
And even worse today...

With a similar population to NZ, Qld got to as high as 23,630 recorded positives in a day during school holidays. If we pro rata the QLD figure, maybe NZ will get to 21,800.

So I’m still confused why hasn’t AU shut the border to NZ (and is open) and why is NZ shut with so many cases

Perhaps Dom would also take on the WA Premier portfolio if WA asked him nicely...............................
Things change so quickly, Don would have trouble keeping the NSW portfolio without a new one, he’s no match for Gladys.

For entry into AU needs to be compared to other countries (USA UK etc) and hospitalisations per 100,000 of population (not cases). AU fed & NSW/Vic state govt policy is to keep the border open. Pre departure and post arrival tests are required.

For entry into NZ, without isolation, is a political problem (for govt). Opposition parties have been questioning the logic of the current policy for weeks.
Saving face is critical. The NZ CV19 response is 80% political & 20% health.

What I have not seen today is how many PCR vs RAT. Hopefully PCR tests are getting back to a 24hr turn around. Some were taking 4-5 days. so would have had limited usefulness. On a per 100,000 population basis Auckland is one of the most infectious places in the world. Like Melbourne & Sydney were some weeks ago, for a few days.

<snip>
"In the past fortnight, of the 14,940 cases reported, 59 percent have been under 30 years of age and 12 percent over the age of 50. The two age groups with the highest percentage of cases are people aged between 10-19 years of age and those aged between 20-29 which account for 25 percent and 25 percent of cases respectively."

But it said the opposite pattern was seen in those who are in hospital with Covid-19.

"Of the current 236 patients with Covid-19 in hospital in the Northern region, there are 19 percent who are under the age of 30 and 54 percent over the age of 50. This reflects similar trends seen overseas where younger people, who are more socially active, often have higher infection rates, though it is the older age groups which are most likely to require hospital treatment from Covid-19.

But in a twist for the PM the NZ High Court has ruled the vaccine mandate is an unjustified incursion on the Bill of Rights.
Police and Defence Departments have stopped further action on the mandate.
