General Discussion/Q&A on Coronavirus (COVID-19)

But the actual message should be that there is a period of one to two days where you are infectious but don’t know it, and during that time ‘you’ wearing a mask and social distancing can help protect others.

Except to do that you have to wear a mask 100% of the time you are out and about because you have no way to know you have covid or might have covid if a close contact hasnt alerted you or you have no symptoms. Crazy.

Only in high density situations.

If people are genuinely concerned about the economic impact to casuals, why not wear a mask when we are processing and paying for things in shops? If people are genuinely concerned that medical appointments and diagnosis for other things such as cancer are being missed or postponed due to the lack of staff… why wouldn’t we wear a mask on public transport or when we are in unavoidable close proximity to others? If we are genuinely concerned about the impact on mental health, why not wear a mask to protect a vulnerable person who may be particularly affected if they get covid?

Lockdowns worked, and were probably necessary in some form until we had the vaccine. But the vaccine is not the complete answer. They are one tool together with other measures such as distancing and drugs
and immunity conferred through natural infection.

"the right message", "the actual message should be", "entirely wrong messaging"... aren't you at least a little embarrassed to say such things given that you have no relevant qualifications whatsoever?

General lockdowns caused more damage than beneficial effects.
Targeted lockdowns on the other hand are beneficial such as lockdowns of Aged care and disability care places. But that message was savagedly attacked when presented by the Barrington Declaration. School lockdowns should not have occurred.

I'm curious to know whether the medical professionals on this thread are noticing more cases of flu like ailments that aren't Covid?
I seem to be picking up far more minor bugs than ever before and talking to others, it seems to be a common story. I'm still to actually have Covid, although perhaps I have?! I'm travelling extensively domestically and I've had more RATs than the Pied Piper, backed up by the occasional PCR. All negative.
Is it a case of two years of limiting herd immunity and there's all sorts of viruses partying?

Not a medical professional, but I've had a number of 1-2 day stints of sore throats - I've put down to change of season in Brisbane.

Haven't been testing myself during or after my travels, but I was temped to walk through the drive-through COVID testing site at Honeysuckle Wharf in Newcastle on the weekend. I observed it was fairly sparce numbers driving through.

Have you had the flu vaccine?

For the past 6-8 months I've had an increase in non-respiratory viruses/bacteria. I've been fine for the past 2-3 years but the current increase could be due to people circulating everywhere again.

A warning for those that have high triglyceride levels. They may make you more likely to get severe covid.

Genetic factors contribute to severe
COVID-19 and blood analyte levels.
Tanha et al. identify blood analytes
associated with the risk of severe COVID-
19. The results suggest a strong genetic
relationship between higher levels of
blood triglycerides and risk of severe
COVID-19

More than 45,000 Covid fines in doubt after landmark Supreme Court win — Daily Mail

Not that the daily mail is a reliable source… but hopefully this is just the tip of the iceberg. Some of the massive fines handed out were beyond insane, and one would hope the states just drop it. Quite amazing looking back at what we all tolerated (only a year ago).
Less than a year ago our CHO had the police put one man into 14 days quarantine at the Covid positive hotel simply because he'd shopped at the same place as the first omicron person in SA had been. He put the sign up 'prisoner' on the window. He had done the right thing and was isolating at home (not positive himself) but that was deemed not good enough.

My reading is that this had nothing to do with the offence, whether the offence had been committed, or the level of the fine. It seems it was a technical issue on the information contained - or rather ‘not’ - on the infringement notice.

Based on an entirely non scientific basis as those "infringements" were in fact contrary to the science.

And you think the remainder of the fines were issued without such “technicalities”?

Insane. Can’t imagine any person of sound mind who’d feel that’s ok.

I believe the information contained on the infringement notice didn’t comply with the relevant legislation.

This was not a case looking at the merits or validity of the underlying law.

But the underlying law was stupid. 95% of outbreaks occurred indoors and not outside. So preventing people from getting outside and keeping them inside was definitely madness.

There was a lot of stupid things from the lockdown. Explain this one to me: why was I locked at him when the NSW lockdown was declared on June 26th despite me having received both doses of COVID vaccine? There was a huge focus on locking people down be it within their city, state or the country but considerably less effort having a frank talk about how one can protect themselves from COVID through sensible measures like masking and social distancing.
