Dan Murphy's and Other Wine Deals

That's what I did (twice now!).

It's satisfying to know that Dan Standish and his wife are the two man team behind these amazing wines, the ones processing and packing your order that arrives a day or two days later, with the money going directly to them.
Great call AC and Wozza; three years a member with Standish. A genuine great bloke to have a talk with. Much prefer to support the winemaker/winery direct rather than through a third party.

What now ???

I agree. I've had a few email chats with Dan. And all the wine journalists talk very highly of his character and genius.

What now ???

I took it as 'Purchased directly from Standish' twice now

I took it as wife was a man!

I should know better, Jessica. My profession demands clarity. It was a bit ambiguous, wasn't it?!

Yep. Steady, guessed right. I have purchased twice from Dan Standish for the 2015 vintage release wines (with some obligatory sharing amongst friends too). Those Winosphere reviews were just too tempting. Especially considering Gary Walsh is not a fan of the Barossa Fruit Bomb.

Does anybody have access to The Wine Front?
Can you please tell me what they gave the Xanadu Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2014? It got a 98 from Ray Jordan.
I'm exited to try it!

You can always try this website (Tasting Notes: 2014 Xanadu Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Margaret River, Australia) doesn't always have scores for the wine you want to know about but in this case it does !
94 - not sure if that's the score you were hoping to hear though as for a top end wine 94 is not the same as 98. Doesn't look like JH or HH have scored it yet.

Thanks for that.
I've noticed (in my limited time in the wine world) that scores do vary a lot between the top critics. I usually do a vivino check to confirm before I buy something - if its 4+ from a decent amount of reviews, it's gotta be really decent. 3.5+ = def drinkable.
I do remember at the start of my journey jumping on the bandwagon when TWF gave a $10 wine a 95 score or something. Or was it $20? discounted to $10, then AMEX offers or something made it ~ $6. Not sure, bit I was a sheep and followed the crowd, and it tasted sub par IMO. Maybe for $6 it is good value, but I dont drink often and would rather spend sub $20 and get something much more nice. Can't remember what it was, but I've put them away to give as presents..lol

The three reviewers on TWF have quite different preferences, so it's important to work out who you align with the most.

A 98 from Ray Jordan doesn't mean too much any more, he's notorious for high scores now, especially for WA wines it seems.

He also sits on the boards of many a WA winery. Conflict of interest much?

Yep, CM gave it a 94. But, in doing so, he said (to quote him):

"It’s not as tannic or dark-coloured as some elite Margaret River cabernet but its quality is abundantly clear. It sits at the upper end of mid wight and is cabernet to its back teeth, though it has both the perfume and fruit flesh to make it a delicious drink even in its youth. Dust, boysenberry, blackcurrant, bay leaves and gravel, with spiciness from oak, and a general smattering of both tobacco and spearmint. It feels secure in its own skin; it exudes an unforced impression of authority."

It pays to carefully read the WF notes. As they give much stronger cues of what to expect. To me, this note says BUY. Especially if a deal was available. But, then again, I'm very partial to a premium WA Cab blend. So I'm bound to see the good in a 94 score review.

Knowing you have an eye for a bargain, Unfunkable, what's the deal you are looking at for the Reserve 14?

Ps. That WF wine might have been the Bremerview Shiraz 14 you were trying to recall.

No deals atm, Xanadu feed came up on my FB and I signed up, then I got a welcome email telling me free shipping, then I read more and saw the 2014 was just released. Popping open a Xanadu 2013 Reserve Cab Sav next month for my birthday
Looking forward to it, as my GOAT is so far the regular Xanadu 2013 Cab Sav.

I looked it up, the cheapie was the Norfolk Rise Vineyard Mount Benson Shiraz 2015.

I really tried to like it as it would of made a great quaffer (for my tasts anyway) ....maybe I am more of a Cab Sav guy .

I had the Reserve 13 in February. I loved it, forgiving the high alcohol content, given its complexity and experience. I'm sure it will be a worthy birthday wine. Just give it some air time before sharing it around.

Ah, yes. The Benson. It was alright for the price. But, like you, life's too short to drink okay wine.

Happy birthday for a few weeks time.

A Margaret River cabernet of distinguished precision, hallmark integrity and grand, enduring stamina, this is a benchmark Xanadu that sits confidently among the great cabernets of the world. There is depth yet elegance to its blackcurrant fruit poise, lifted with fragrant violet perfume, framed eloquently in the cedar and tobacco of classy French oak. Mineral-fine tannins mark out a finish that will effortlessly see out decades of potential. Drink 2029-2039
