SQ Tips, Trips and Tales

Can you actually BYO?

No. It it standard for airlines to ban BYO alcohol consumption in their Conditions of Carriage, for VN it is clause 12.2:

12.2. Passengers are not permitted to consume alcoholic beverages on our flights unless served by us. We reserve the right to refuse to serve, or to remove, any alcoholic beverages already served to the passenger.

This is the consumption not served by us but does that prohibit you from BYO and giving the bottle to the airline to serve you?

Further evidence why I am no longer SQ #1 fanboi - Tue 18th I need to fly MEL-PVG - flts I want on SQ ~$8.1K - VN similar timings ~$2.6K - I kid you not

They do ridiculously well out of the Antipodean market. In business class I did 2 work trips to SIN-LHR return this year, my partner did 1 to AU and 1 to NZ from SIN. He got more PPS dollars out of those trips than I did.

At the other - non glamourous - end of the spectrum I've yet to see a reasonable economy fare from SIN-MEL return cheaper than we paid to travel to NYC and back in premium economy (other than use it or lose it fares that were 8 months in advance, and no changes allowed).

This mite be better posted in 'What cheeses me off' but it is SQ related...

We are heading next week to Europe, with Dublin first destination. Travelling in J with SQ, but they dont offer a DUB booking option, despite *A partners LH and LX both offering reasonable connections via FRA, MUC or ZRH. There are probly more connx, I didnt bother checking.

So our tkt is HBA via MEL/SIN to ZRH, followed by a seperate booking with Swiss (LX) with 2h 50m connection time. Both SQ and LX routes have good punctuality records. (Yes I know, the better the record the better the chance yr flt/s will be the aberration...)

You can read plenty of blurb about seamless connections, integrated ticketing, hand and glove partnerships and all that at Star Alliance, but I hv not been able to get a clear answer to the Q why SQ cant offer a thru ticket, and more importantly I still cannot get a declared, absolute assurance that we can thru-check our bags - from SQ to LX and not hv to 'enter' at ZRH.

Best advice from SQ Mel Lounge manager is to check bags from HBA only to MEL and then re-check because they can then link bookings. So thats what we'll do, but frankly Grrrrr.

I think the PE fare SIN-JFK is an exception rather than the rule, $1.2k SGD one way is ridiculously cheap considering the distance! Wonder how they make it work, business isn’t really more expensive compared to SIN-SYD J either.

I find SQ economy fares to fluctuate a lot, I’ve never been able to nail down their strategy. A$400 one way SYD-SIN-HKG right before CNY, through fares being far cheaper than ex-SIN (I’ve saved $700 one way by positioning to CGK-SIN-SYD)…

Sometimes it’s just all too hard and I go for a TR bulkhead.

Sounds like sound advice, as you will be in SQ's domain then not VA(?)'s. They should be able to print your LX boarding pass as well.

Edit: It also seems that the third carrier is complicating things. SQ don't seem to have HBA-DUB fares online, but do have MEL-DUB fares. But is available if booked as multi city HBA-SIN, SIN-DUB but only via AMS, FRA and LHR.

We've done a few other years ex-MEL to somewhere else (eg cough) with a 3-4 month stopover in SIN, way cheaper than buying either as return out of SIN. SQ: SIN is what QF:SYD in terms of premium.

Thanks and yes that’s the irritation - dig around, mix up and separate yr flts and you may find the destination within SQ’s matrix of fares, but not in a complete sequence. Guessing you can see Mel/DUB because that excludes the domestic leg HBA/MEL leg which in our case is with QF.. increasingly Caveat Emptor!
