COVID-19 in Japan and Japanese waters

If you are travelling to the US via Japan as a transit passenger and you are concerned that the US may restrict passengers arriving from Japan then I would try to change flights to avoid Japan. I would not expect the current US administration to take a subtle approach and allow transit passengers in but would expect a blanket ban.

Going in the other direction I don't see Japan denying entry to passengers travelling from the US.

I am going to Japan in May for two weeks (direct flights to / from Australia). I would be very surprised if Japan denies me entry, I think the more possible scenario (not that I think it is very likely but it is certainly possible) is for Australia to make me self-quarantine on the return. It would certainly be inconvenient but not the end of the world although my travelling companion (my youngest cygnet) would be a little less sanguine. He knows it is a possibility but he is still extremely keen to go.
Thanks for the update. Travel is part of a RTW F rewards that has changed of the past 12 months. We have a stop in JP then to the US via LHR, which was a stop but now just transit. Then US back to JP then to AU. I am actually keen to go and am not that worried, it is MrsM who is more sceptical would rather postpose. The only leg of any concern is the stop in JP and and then flying JP-UK-US and the borders being closed while in the the air. The rest of the trip or being put into self quarantine on arrival back in AU does not worry me.

As you can appreciate changing F rewards across JL and BA is not that simple, we have looked at that. We are quite happy to move the trip back 12 months and as easter is earlier next year I can actually start changing flights a week before we have to travel and and keep the current PNR which was booked under the old points regime. Also as JL will be flying F from AU I can most likely get F for the entire journey with only a couple of domestic sectors in J. Interesting times.

Well as the father of a daughter who works in the respiratory unit of a major Melbourne hospital I know that you are wrong. Covid 19 is very much being prepared for and indeed various measures are already in place.

They plan and prepare for various disasters. ie With the recent bad bushfire season much was put in place, though as it turned out most of it including for more extreme incidents was not required.

They are also having to deal with many known killers/ health threats that are already here, or as in the case of the flu soon will be.

With tent cities we are a long way off actually having to erect anything if it is required.

I agree. Mrs SS works at a public hospital in Sydney and I can assure you that the hospital is taking Covid-19 very seriously indeed. They have very extensive plans in place and a long list of measures have already been taken to manage the current situation.

So if you come back from your trip and have to self isolate, what happens with your wife? Does she live away from you for that period of time or do you live together and she goes to work as usual? Or is she forced into isolation with you?

We live in a house that would allow me to be in quarantine separate from the rest of the occupants of the house.

We live in a house that would drive MrsM and I nuts if we had to be in the same space for 14 days ;) We are also used to me been away 3-4 days a week for the past 10 years. Just human habits.

I answered the question from a physical perspective only. Mentally yes it would be a bit of a struggle and I would miss my daily swim but at the end of the day I am pretty adaptable. Probably prefer 2 weeks on Christmas Island so I can tick it off my bucket list.😀

Yes, and maybe just in time for another great virus in 12 months time. Who knows? 😀

The daughter from the Melbourne family who tested positive just before the Australian evacuation has now tested negative twice according to the mother's Twitter (@qtiepie).
And the family will fly back to Australia on the weekend

South Korea:

The number of people being tested for the virus stood at 21,810 as of Wednesday midnight. The country has tested a total of 140,775 people, with 118,965 testing negative.

Japan:

As of noon March 5, excluding the Diamond Princess, had tested 6,519 people.

So, 4.6% of South Korea's number (despite having a population that is 2.5x larger).

Positives so far is 284 (as of the same time; up around 40 or so since then) versus a little north of 6,000, which is around 4.7%.

So, extremely likely that Japan's lower number of cases is entirely due to the lower number of tests. And no reason for the Australian government to ban South Korea while not banning Japan.

Think they need to be more worried about domestic cases they are not testing
Agree, my suspicion is we need to be much more concerned about countries with low rates of testing (Japan, Iran and the US spring to mind) than South Korea.

Of course testing is not perfect.i have posted a link on one of these threads that the test used in China will be negative in 30% of those who actually do have Covid-19.
Also testing of asymptomatic patients can be an inefficient use of resources.
From the public health perspective it is the tracking down of suspected contacts.Singapore appears to be doing a very good job of that.

Agree it's thorough contact tracing that pays a good dividend in containment and SG has done, and is doing, a great job in that regard.
