COVID-19 in Japan and Japanese waters

As with the Tokyo Marathon, the terms of the Olympics ticketing agreements allow for no refunds if cancellation is due to COVID-19.

Typical!

Well when the world is running down, I guess you make the best of what's stillaround...

February visitors to Japan down 58.3% YoY to a still far from non-negligible 1.085 million.

April 2011 after 3/11 was down 62.5%.

Still 87,200 from China and 143,900 from South Korea in February, which makes their current number of infections all the more, cough, impressive.

Multiple credible government leaks now point to a (negative) announcement regarding the Tokyo Olympics around the end of this Japanese long weekend.

They're probably just going to announce that for 2020 only, the Olympic flag will be redesigned so that the rings are all 1.5m apart.

The impending narrative is that Japan has now been beset by imported cases from Europe, and so in the hope of alleviating European anxiety, a move to October may be unavoidable. Repeating the 1964 dates (Oct 10-24) and moving the marathon back from Sapporo to Tokyo will be marketed as major gains.

People with tickets won't be offered refunds, but will have the right to buy back in again.

The Olympics needs to be put back at least a year. Personally I would go for 2 so that it is held after the vaccine has been deployed. The Olympics to then re-calibrate the years that the Summer and Winter Olympics are held. Either that or just skip Japan. But in fairness moving the whole future calendar by 2 years is probably the fairest way to go.

As a huge event there is no point picking a date like October when even if Japan is ok CV 19 wise, many parts of the world are most likely not going to be, and even if they seem ok they will be nervous about another spike.

And simply because the Olympics is so huge you cannot just keep pushing it back for both logistical reasons and as the actual athletes need to be able to train to peak at the right time.

Still curious as to why people think they need to be held at all.

If the timing is that sensitive to the US sports calendar and TV rights, and we've just seen that that can get cancelled at the drop of a hat...

If not for the Olympics, Japan would have handled COVID-19 less incompetently, and the world would have been better off as a result.

My post was more if they are going to be held when they should be held, rather than being a discussion on whether the Olympics should ever be held again anywhere.

Olympics: Tokyo Games to be postponed to 2021 due to coronavirus

Still just speculation, but perhaps Coates is preparing the way ...

This year’s Tokyo Olympic Games are set to be officially called off.

The Games are all but certain to be postponed for a year because of COVID-19.

The Australian Olympic Committee have told their athletes to prepare for a Games in the northern summer of 2021.

Pressure from sport powerhouses such as United States swimming and UK athletics, who called for the Games to be postponed, as well as the Brazil Olympic Committee, it pushed the IOC to reconsider its position. No official announcement has been made by the IOC.

Earlier on Monday the Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told parliament that postponing the 2020 Olympics “may become inevitable” if the new coronavirus outbreak makes it impossible to hold the Games safely, Japan’s prime minister said Monday.

Abe told parliament that Japan was still committed to a “complete” Games, but added: “if that becomes difficult, in light of considering athletes first, it may become inevitable that we make a decision to postpone”.
